Action over party drug welcomed

Action over party drug welcomed

The New Zealand Medical Association welcomes the quick action taken by the Ministry of Health over the drug known as One4b, which has the potential to cause serious harm to people.

Two nightclub patrons were taken unconscious to Auckland Hospital at the weekend suffering breathing problems and seizures, according to media reports. A third person was also admitted to hospital in a serious condition after taking the drug.

Although labelled a "dietary supplement", the substance is clearly marketed as a party drug. The promoter claims that taking the drug will induce a state of "euphoria".

"This drug is closely related to the drug GHB (also known as Fantasy), which was banned from public use a year ago. Although One4b may be technically legal, it is extremely dangerous and those taking it may be putting themselves at great risk," NZMA Chairman Dr Pippa MacKay.

"This drug should be banned before anyone else is harmed, or even killed by it," Dr MacKay concluded.
