LOOP Screen emailer 16-03-01
WELCOME...
to the debut e-mailer for 2001 by the Loop Screen Team.
Here's the plan: no pigeonholes, no format distinctions - the movie comes first. (Then we'll tell you how, where and when you can check it out, be it on the Big Screen, DVD, VHS, SKY or TV.)
A quick run-down, one-time-only:
THIS WEEK previews all the week's Big Screen releases, along with the pick of new Videos, DVDs and Sky Movies.
NOW PLAYING peddles the latest Big Screen, DVD and Video reviews at loop.co.nz from reviewers Noel Meek, Simon Sweetman, Emma Philpott and Mark Cubey, with handy links provided for your surfing pleasure.
AROUND THE WEB is a digest of the weird, interesting and helpful, with links to news items at the web's best movie sites ('cause you guys can't be expected to surf them all, every day, right?). Remember, movie news on the net should often be seasoned with a hefty pinch of salt. Look for this section to expand in the coming weeks.
Want something included in this e-mailer? Let me know at matt@loop.co.nz.
Enjoy!

THIS WEEK
TRAFFIC (BIG SCREEN, DVD (R1 29/5)): Steven
Soderbergh's epic tale of the drug trade. Following three
stories shot using different techniques, featuring an
all-star cast and with the biggest buzz since Crouching
Tiger, this one should be huge (and at the very least,
long). Bet Harrison Ford's wishing he'd accepted the lead;
Michael Douglas is raking in the kudos.

THE EXORCIST - THE VERSION
YOU'VE NEVER SEEN (BIG SCREEN, DVD (R1)): The spinning head,
that pea-soup spew and history's least titillating
masturbation scene get a new lease of life with added
scenes, new effects and digital sound. See it again if only
to ask yourself: why, despite the gallery of horrors on
show, is the hospital scene still the most upsetting in the
movie?

MALENA (BIG SCREEN):
Latest from the director of Cinema Paradiso.

THE TERMINATOR - SPECIAL EDITION (DVD (R4)): At last, the DVD to go with that Terminator 2: The Ultimate Edition DVD you ordered in from Region 1. What? You didn't? Well, what are you waiting for?
SUMMER OF SAM (SKY MOVIES, DVD (R1), VHS): Spike Lee's smouldering saga of the summer of 1977, when the Son of Sam stalked New York's streets. Adrien Brody and Mira Sorvino topline. Purists will want to pick up the Region 1 DVD from United Video or Real Groovy, but for everyone else, there's Sky Movies, Sunday, 8:30pm.

NOW PLAYING
NURSE BETTY (Big Screen, DVD (R1)): Neil LaBute's
follow-up to the thoroughly detestable yet perversely
compelling Your Friends & Neighbours seems a more mainstream
affair. Simon has the

MISS CONGENIALITY
(Big Screen, DVD (R1 1/5)): She's a man, man... What do you
get when you put a feisty Bullock comes up against a
charismatic Bratt? Simon checked out the mostly congenial

THE ART OF
WAR (BIG SCREEN, DVD (R1)): Meanwhile, The Art of War didn't
fare so well with Simon. Is it just me, or was One Night
Stand the final nail in the coffin that once was Wesley
Snipes' career?
http://loop.co.nz/?m=330
PAY IT FORWARD
(BIG SCREEN): Anyone else wondering just what kind of
freaky-looking adult Haley Joel Osment's going to sprout
into? In the meantime, Noel endured the sprightly tyke's
latest
opus:

tantalising copies of the Crouching Tiger Region 3 DVD
went?

'HARRY'
POTTY: Hot on the heels of the Lord of the Rings teaser
comes the first trailer for Harry Potter and the
Philosopher's Stone (which will be retitled 'Sorcerer's

BE AFRAID: The big-screen version of Scooby-Doo currently shooting across the Tasman won't hit NZ for over a year. But if this hideous first cast photo from the film - posted by the folks at Coming Attractions (http://www.corona.bc.ca/films/mainFramed.html) - is anything to go by, this one's gonna bite the big Scooby-snack.
