Strong Growth For NZ Music Industry Commission

Strong Growth For NZ Music Industry Commission

The New Zealand Music Industry Commission has reported significant growth since its inception less than a year ago. Executive Director, Cath Andersen, said she is pleased with the progress the Commission had made already into many of its short term goals.

"The Commission was formed in June 2000 to assist in the development and growth of this country’s contemporary music industry, " she said. "We have a number of exciting initiatives in development from communications strategies to educational projects."

Cath Andersen said the Commission had been working closely in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and music educators to develop a new Arts Curriculum educational resource featuring New Zealand music.

Cath Andersen said some major promotional activity would take place in May, now officially New Zealand Music Month. The Commission would be joined by APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association), RIANZ (Recording Industry Association of New Zealand), the Radio Broadcasters Association (RBA) and NZ On Air in a month of celebration of New Zealand music.

During New Zealand Music Month the Commission would undertake a Pacific Island Music Roadshow to provide the commission with feedback for Pacific Island Music projects. A NZMIC seminar series would be held in the country’s main centres. The seminars would cover all aspects of the music industry from publishing to management.

"We are also very excited about the launch of our Commission website in May," said Cath Andersen. "The site’s main focus is to provide practical information for the advancement of New Zealand music. An Online Resource Centre will contain data such as a taxation and business guide, a venue database and links to other useful sites."

The Commission had also made promising progress in the areas of Maori music and trade and export.

It was currently circulating a research paper to look into the development of a Music Audit. The Audit would provide an accurate measure of the worth of music activities in New Zealand .

Cath Andersen said the Commission’s second edition of its quarterly newsletter, Te Manu, would be available in April.

The NZ Music Industry Commission business plan is available by either writing to the Commission or accessing the web site: www.nzmusic.org.nz. The business plan summarises the Commission’s annual, medium and long term objectives.
