NZ On Air Improves Accessibility

NZ On Air announced two grants given from the latest funding round that will improve New Zealanders’ accessibility to Maori language programming.

Moko Toa 2: Hara’s Revenge, is the second series of a Maori language children’s drama. Combining live action with animation, the programme centres on Hori, a young Maori boy who is the modern transformation of the ancient hero, Moko Toa.

“The programme will be reversioned into English, and will be played on Sunday mornings. The Maori language version will play within Mai Time,” NZ On Air chief executive Jo Tyndall said.

“NZ On Air is pleased that it can fund the reversioning, so that Moko Toa: Hara's Revenge will now be accessible in both languages. This will assist in extending audiences' ability to enjoy this delightful series,” she said.

A separate NZ On Air funding decision means that English subtitles will now be provided on the second screening only of Te Karere, the Maori news programme that screens twice daily each weekday.

“Subtitling will open the programme up to a new audience. NZ On Air’s own research indicates there is considerable support from those without Te Reo ability for the subtitling of Maori language programmes,” she said.

NZ On Air has allocated $100,000 to Te Haeata Productions to reversion 12 x five minute programmes for Moko Toa 2: Hara’s Revenge. TVNZ Captioning service will receive $91,066 to subtitle Te Karere into the English language.
