Illness Forces NZSO Pianist To Cancel Tour

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has contracted Australian pianist Roger Woodward to replace Bruno Leonardo Gelber after Gelber's recent withdrawal from tour due to ill health. There will be no change of conductor though there will a change to one work only, Woodward will perform Prokofiev's third piano concerto in place of the Schumann piano concerto.

South American pianist, Bruno Leonardo Gelber was scheduled to perform with the NZSO in a North Island tour starting this week but, on the advice of his physician, has had to withdraw his engagement.

Roger Woodward is one of the foremost international musicians of our time. He has performed at the major international festivals and concert venues the world over as well as with all the major orchestras under such renowned conductors as Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel and Georg Tintner.

Woodward will perform with the NZSO in eight concerts in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Palmerston North under guest conductor Yoel Levi.

The Great Classics programme to be performed on this tour will now be Berlioz's Béatrice et Bénédict Overture, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No 3, Mozart's Divertimento in D Major and Symphony No 41 'Jupiter'. The Great Orchestra programme performed in Wellington and Auckland will remain unchanged.
