An Equal Music ­ new paintings by Joanna M Paul, ceramics by David Garland Idiom Studio 1 ­ 19 May 2002

Two of this country¹s most admired visual artists combine for an exhibition at Idiom Studio in May.

Wanganui-based painter and poet Joanna Margaret Paul has produced a series of paintings inspired by the tall Washington palms she walks past each day. ³I wanted to reflect the rhythms of their changing intervals against the sky.²

Joanna has exhibited at major private and public galleries (including Dunedin¹s Hocken Gallery, Wellington¹s City Gallery and Wanganui¹s Sarjeant Gallery) since 1970. She has also published poetry and will read from a recent collection at the opening of this exhibition.

David Garland was originally educated at Rongotai College but has spent much of his working life in the UK, where he is now one of the leading ceramic artists. He has had one-man shows at galleries in London and New York, and has taken part in group exhibitions in Australia, Japan, India and other countries. This will be his first New Zealand exhibition.

David¹s work is held in some of the world¹s best known public collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Craft Council and the Cleveland Art Gallery. This exhibition features work he produced on a recent visit to New Zealand, with designs which echo Joanna Paul¹s organic rhythms.
