Good News for Film Festival

12.30 pm

The application by the Society for the Promotion of Community Standards for an interim injunction to prevent the screening of Y tu mamá también has been declined by the President of Film and Literature Board of Review.

The Film Festival was advised of the decision today at 12.30 pm, seven hours before the screening. "Tickets have been selling fast all day, and a sell-out screening seems guaranteed by the free publicity that has been the only positive aspect to this whole sorry farce," says Festival director, Bill Gosden.

"This defeat for the Society for the Promotion of Ignorance and Fear is encouraging," he said, "but it would be unwise to open the champagne just yet. The legal guerrilla tactics of this organisation reveal a breathtaking obsessiveness and determination to impose their views on the rest of us. We should not be complacent. I am sure that we have not heard the last of this."

The President's decision is being communicated to interested parties in a 13-page document which has not been received as we make this press release.

"We are assuming that the judgement will have a favourable implication for the other contested film, The Piano Teacher," says Gosden. "To the best of our knowledge there will be no impediment to our scheduled screenings."
