Do u like innovative music?

Do u like innovative music - then come to Greg Malcolm mon 23 8pm

As part of a nation-wide tour, guitarist, improviser and composer Greg Malcolm stops in Auckland to present his new programme for adapted guitar. Amplifying the instrument from several points, his acoustic set is characterised by hypnotic evolving melodies, in which sounds are created live and organically via string manipulation and layered drones. Conjuring a surreal sense of space and the timelessness of the New Zealand landscape, this work suggests feelings of being Homesick for Nowhere. Homesick from Nowhere will be recorded live and released this September on the label Corpus Hermeticum. http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~malcolmg/

Excerpts from reviews:

Often employing multiple guitars simultaneously to generate drones and rhythms. This has culminated in the design of his own, multi-output 'adapted guitar'. This five-pickup beast, featuring extra harmonically resonating sympathetic strings and independent tuning at both ends, features on three of the cuts on this new album.

Think you know what guitar sounds like? You're wrong! You cannot truly know your guitar until you have shaken the uncut string ends in lieu of more costly percussion, rattled a tray of ball bearings around on its deck, and shoved a wooden paddle through the strings, playing on it with a violin bow. This is guitar, as experimental as those bombs you used to build in the backyard with your brother.

"His writing is very satirical and even a harmless song title can rile the media. If you concentrate hard, you may remember another hoohah over Peter Plumley Walker in '95. Was there something about music? Greg Malcolm was the man responsible, and I don't believe he has any remorse. Indeed, he seems gleefully amused."
