International Success for Penguin Cookbook Authors

Four Penguin New Zealand cookbooks are finalists in the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2002. They are The Ruth Pretty Cookbook by Ruth Pretty – finalist in the Best Chef book category; Simple Deli Food by Julie Le Clerc – finalist in the Best Easy Recipes category; The Outdoor Table by Garth Hokianga – finalist in the Best Entertaining category; and The Fragrance of Basil, Food and Memories of my Italian Childhood by Raffaela Delmonte – finalist in the Best Food Literature category.

“I am delighted at the announcement, it’s wonderful that our top food writers and their books are recognised in this way, against international competition” says Penguin Associate Publisher Bernice Beachman. All titles are currently available at bookstores nationwide.

Over 3000 entries are received each year, from more than 50 countries in more than 30 languages, for the Gourmand World Cookbook awards – the most respected awards of their kind worldwide. The international jury is made up of Jean Jacques Ratier, Commissaire du Salon International du Livre Gourmand (France), Dun Gifford, President of the Oldways Exchange and Trust Foundation (USA), Oscar Caballero, journalist (Argentina), Prince Franz-Wilhelm of Prussia (Germany), Edouard Cointreau, Chairman of the Awards Committee and John McEwen, Chairman, West175 Media Group (New Zealand).

Winners of each category go on to compete in the 2002 Best in The World which will be announced at the Gala Dinner in Perigueux, France on November 28th .
