The beautiful Princess of a fairy-tale kingdom has fallen in love with a Pebble! The King is not impressed. Adventure, intrigue, excitement and romance quickly ensue. And there’s a dragon.

A new play from award winning playwright, Peter Cox (Chapman Tripp Outstanding New Playwright 2002), starring a stellar cast of cynical swineherds, evil henchmen, handsome princes, merry minstrels, strange beasts, haunted forests and the odd impenetrable fortress. Written as part of Ken Duncum’s freshly formed MA in Creative Writing, The ‘Princess and the Pebble’ is an absurdist Fairy Tale of epically insignificant proportions.

The Director, Judith Wayers says: ‘What excites me is the combination of using music, costume and puppetry as a vital part of the production, giving the audience a truly magical experience. It has all the elements of a classic children’s fairy story, but with a comedy and level of sophistication aimed at adults. Like ‘The Plum Tree’, it’s at once sweet, funny, sad and more than a little twisted.’

Peter Cox says: ‘I’d gotten all enthusiastic about the concept of the classic ‘hero myths’ and decided I wanted to do one myself. Unfortunately my hero turned out to be an inanimate object, and the story-tellers a pair of swineherds who weren’t even there.’

With original live music by premier Celtic minstrels ‘Carousel’ (who have just released their self titled album) and performed by Aiden Grealish (The Plum Tree), Peter Cox and Camille Keenan (Post Pubescent Cheerleaders…) ‘The Princess and the Pebble’ will bring out the Child in every Adult, the Beauty in every Beast and the Prince in every Frog. Hooray!
