Playhouse Theatre re-opens!
Waitakere City’s historic Playhouse Theatre re-opens this Saturday night with a gala performance of Cole Porter’s famous musical comedy, Anything Goes!
Waitakere City Mayor, Bob Harvey, will officially re-open the 65-year-old, art deco building (in Glendale Rd, Glen Eden), which has been closed for about two and a half years while major renovations were undertaken to restore and expand it.
Director Adey Ramsel, musical director Marilyn Cameron and choreographer Sonya Schischka will be launching the show in what is essentially a brand new theatre, which boasts 240 seats, a larger, sprung stage with a revolve and back projection equipment, a dedicated orchestra pit, expansive new dressing rooms and green room, a small boardroom and air-conditioning.
The razzle-dazzle show is one of the theatre’s biggest ever, with a cast of more than 50 actors, singers and dancers and a production crew of more than 60.
Set in the 1930s aboard the cruise ship, the SS American, Anything Goes takes the audience on a hilarious sea-bound journey from New York to London with American nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, her pal Billy Crocker, Billy’s debutante-love Hope Harcourt, Hope’s hapless English fiancé Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and “Public Enemy Number 13” Moonface Martin, who slips onboard the ship to avoid the FBI.
The show includes such Cole Porter classics as I Get A Kick Out of You, You’re the Top, It’s De-Lovely and, of course, Anything Goes.
The season of Anything Goes runs from March 2 to 15. Tickets are $20 adults, $18 students/senior citizens and $15 children. For bookings, phone 818 8791.
