The Art of Islam Comes to Life

The Art of Islam Comes to Life

To coincide with the opening of the magnificent Art of Islam exhibition, Auckland Museum is hosting a special day of activities on Sunday 20 April to educate young and old on Islamic art and culture.

Fascinating talks include Muhammed Shameem from the Islamic Resource Centre who will hold a lecture on Misconceptions About Islam. This lecture will be aimed at a non-Muslim audience, discussing faith in God, atheism, society today and the misconceptions about Islam promoted by the media.

Dr. Gregory Booth from the University of Auckland will introduce visitors to Music in the Worlds of Islam.

Ashraf Anwar will hold a lecture on Religous Art and Visual Culture of Islamic Spain. Ashraf has lectured at the University of Auckland on Spain, Hispanic culture and Ancient Egyptian Civilization.

There will also be the opportunity to view the BBC Documentary,” Hajj – The Journey of a Lifetime”. A documentary that follows some of the 20 000 Britons who make the journey to their spiritual homeland, Mecca, and unravels the mystery surrounding this remarkable event.

Fun events for the kids will include craft activities, calligraphy, and storytelling.

Admission to this Living Treasures Day is by usual donation, children are free.

The Art of Islam is on display from 18 April to 15 June 2003.
