The Friday Arvo Surf Update

The Friday Arvo Surf Update

Well here I am again, and quite happy (well not that happy) to eat humble pie. Yes you Highlander supporters, I take it on the chin. Big ups to your team, beating the mighty Blues. Just to show you that I'm really unbiased, I cant wait to watch the Hurricanes give the Warratahs a thumping this evening.

OK, I know you have all been waiting see if the Hot Buttered contest was rigged and whether I scored myself a new board. Well thanks to our mates at Sony, we have pics of the lucky swine who won the HB mini mal...Leon Van de Water from Auckland.

Weather Situation

We have a major High slipping on to us this weekend. Looking at this High over the next few days, it just gets better and we are in for a good warm burst of sunshine and lightish winds. The cluster of a couple of Lows and assorted Fronts that have been sitting off the East Coast are really slowly moving further to the East. As the High gets closer it will push this system out in to the middle of the Pacific. The swell that we have been seeing from Gisborne south will slowly ease away. We have had a reboot of northeast swell that is going more to the east as usual. It is still looking like the swell will hang around over the weekend with southeast winds tending more easterly. Now, on the West Coast we have the big High approaching. Way down, a south Low is slipping on by. It is definitely looking like another Low will form to the northeast of us by Sunday or Monday.

Regional Report

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: Small southwest swell this afternoon of 1-2 feet and south to southeasterly wind. We should see a lift in swell tomorrow. Not too much, 2-3 feet, maybe even 4, but enough to keep it going for the weekend with the swell easing on Sunday. Now, the wind will slowly go more northeast by Sunday. HT 1730.

East Coast: It has been another good week for the East Coast surfers with northeast to east swells continuing all week. Today is no different with 2-3 feet of northeast swell with a touch of east. We can expect the swell to continue all weekend. That's the good news, the bad is that we will have onshore southeast, finally swing northeast by Sunday. Tell you what though, by Monday that new low will have developed and away we go again. HT 1405.

Gisborne; Wairarapa:

It is looking like a weekend of easterlies. Starting off with southeast and swinging through to the northeast. Now we have a north east swell slowly going more to the east of 2-3 feet on most of the coast. We might just see a little more before this swell starts to ease. Next week is looking promising north swell as well. HT 1445.

Taranaki:

Offshores this weekend and a small southwest swell. Down the coast is the best option with southeast tending northeast by Sunday. A couple of feet to play, that will get a little lift tomorrow and start easing again on Sunday. Offshores all next week. Pretty damn small in town, but still there are guys out. Nice offshore this arvo. HT 1645.

Wellington:

West Coast; Light offshore or cross shore southerlies and the same thing for the weekend. Really can't see any swell developing with the big High pushing on to the country.

South Coast; The south swell has virtually gone we just have the last remains of a dying or should I say dead swell. Southerly this afternoon, southeast tomorrow and northeast by Sunday. Not a lot of options this weekend. Swell on the East Coast, but it is looking like Easterlies all weekend. HT 1250.

South Island

West Coast:

Light onshore this afternoon with a southwest swell of 2-3 feet even the odd 4. Now, we can expect with this big high approaching we will be in for light variables and small clean waves in the mornings. Offshores should predominate. HT 1740.

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

It's been your week this week and it is looking like continuing on into the weekend. This arvo we have 2-3 feet of northeast swell and a light southerly wind. Waves tomorrow guys, with the northeast swell hanging there just for you lot. We will also be seeing a new swell from the northeast develop on Monday. HT 1345.

Dunedin; Southland:

South swell of 2-3 feet this arvo and a southerly onshore. We have northeast swell of a couple of feet on north facing spots and this should hang around through the weekend. Nothing big lads, just small north swell. Southerly winds. In fact you might even think you are back in summer. HT 1135.
