Opera Is Coming To The West Coast
The NBR New Zealand Opera, in conjunction with Class Act Opera, will perform Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” in Greymouth’s Regent Theatre on July 4 and 5.
The West Coast Development Trust has sponsored the visit. It will contribute $5,000 to marketing and promotion of the event and underwrite the show to a maximum of $20,000, said Trust Chairman Frank Dooley.
“The Trust is pleased to affirm its support for our region by backing the opera. We must continue to assist the organisations tasked with the necessary social, cultural and community strategies that are essential to reinforce the economic drivers" he said.
Regional communities have had little or no access to professional opera in over 20 years. The Barber of Seville features an all New Zealand cast and a small ensemble orchestra. Seen as funny and accessible, it is one of the top 10 most performed operas in the world, but has not been in New Zealand for some time.
"The West Coast Development Trust is proud to contribute to the development of sustainable regional markets for New Zealand arts," Mr Dooley said.
