Celebrate the Maori New Year at Auckland Museum
Each year around June, the stars of Matariki and Puanga signal the end of one year in Aotearoa and the start of the next. Traditionally Maori have recognised the rise of Matariki as a time to celebrate and prepare for our indigenous New Year.
This year, Auckland Museum will be celebrating Matariki for the first time with a special Living Treasures Day of events and entertainment on Sunday 22 June.
Take the time to view the largest and most comprehensive collection of Maori taonga in the world, with a special guided tour of the Maori galleries.
There will be plenty of action for the kids with educational trails through the Maori galleries, as well as the opportunity to learn traditional Maori craft activities such as weaving.
Other highlights include documentary screenings, talks, websites and plenty more!
While you are here, why not experience Maori culture by joining the Museum performance group, Manaia, in a lively exhibition of song, dance and stories. Their compelling performance will give you an insight into Maori mythology, genealogy and spirituality.
Admission to this Living
Treasures Day is by usual donation, children are free.
Admission charges apply for the Manaia
performance.
