Winter Woolies
Welcome to our June edition of your Surfco Monthly. Well, Keith is a sneaky little weasel and has taken off for a surf. So, I'm here to deliver your fix of surfing news, events, pics, comps...& a feminine touch!
The Kaikoura Classic held at the beginning of this month scored good waves AGAIN - Offshores, sunny, a perfect 3 feet, and snow on the mountain ranges. Check out the results below.
For all the girl surfers out there, check out the "Wave Women" article in the new DASH mag (details below) and there's also an opportunity to win some jewellery form Opanui - sterling silver jewellery with a difference (see the latest comps).

Winter Woolies
You could well be needing winter woolies as grandma used to say, this winter.
I love winter, not just because there are less people in the water. Its because the weather can actually be better. No rain and no seabreezes...just cold.
Winter swells pushing up from the south on both coasts. Cold southerlies howlling through Wellington and the Cook Strait region. Snow on the foot hills in the South Island. Brrrrrrgh, makes me feel cold. Wetties are so good now that we don't have a worry do we. Just keep your noggin out of the drink.
If you don't have a good wetty for this winter then treat yourself to one and you will never look back. A good fitting warm wetty is paramout if you are going to surf through the winter. So get down to your local surfing specialist and check out this winters models. We will continue to do our job and keep you informed on the winter conditions.

Girls Surfing
We've found a new magazine on the shelves - DASH...the essential read for the healthy kiwi woman.
Check out the great article called "Wave Women" - A girl's guide to surfing.
This is about the rising number of women surfers and how to get started in this predominantly male dominated sport.
Keep an eye out for this mag, as next month there's an article on women in snowboarding.
2003-04 Oakley/ ASL Big Wave Awards
Australia and New Zealand waters
Prizemoney $20,000 1 June 03 - 31 January 2004
The Big Wave Awards are on again, meaning that the surfer who rides the biggest wave between 1st June 2003 - 31st January 2004 in Australasian waters will win.
This was won last year by Ross Clarke-Jones (an Aussie) for his tow-in ride in September 2002, at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania. Runner up was our very own Doug Young, with a massive wave ridden off the South Island reefbreak, Papatowai.
Major challengers for this OAKLEY/ASL BIG WAVE AWARD include: Paul Paterson and Courtenay Gray (have already had some practice sessions south-west of West Australia), Cheyne Horan of the Gold Coast, Koby Abberton and Mark Mathews of Maroubra, and Doug Young and Miles Ratima of New Zealand.
