Friday Arvo Surf Update

It feels quite chilly this afternoon. Makes me glad I have a warm as wetsuit for the winter. It is looking a little sad for waves for most of us. Read on and we shall see what is happening over the weekend. Sunday is looking like a day of rising swell for the whole of the East Coast, from Gisborne south. It wouldn't be a FASU without a plug for our boys in black - Go the ALL BLACKS in South Africa on Sunday morning.

WEATHER SITUATION:

We have a great looking low formed off the East Coast of the Wairarapa that will slowly head to the southeast. A big high-pressure system stretches out from Tasmania and is centered quite low in the Tasman Sea. We have a low way down in the Southern Ocean that produced the southwest swell on the West Coast, & is moving out from under the South Island and will move further to the west.

REGIONAL REPORT:

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: No shortage of swell this afternoon, with solid 6-8 feet even the occasional bigger one. The swell will be big tomorrow as well and start to ease slowly. It should still be a reasonable size on Sunday. Southwest winds will finally swing south and then to the southeast on Sunday arvo. HT 1300.

East Coast:

We may as well forget surfing on this coast this weekend. Offshore west to southwest winds will prevail. There will be a small lift in swell tomorrow morning, but not big enough to surf. Not until next week when the onshores arrive, will we see anything tempting enough to drag you out. HT 1045.

Gisborne; Wairarapa:

Rising south swell for the weekend. Small this afternoon with 1-2 feet, but it will get bigger. Southerly winds in the Wairarapa tending southwest tomorrow and southwest for the rest of the weekend. Gisborne can expect the same rising south swell with south westerlies all weekend. Sunday is when we will really see the swell kick in. HT 0920.

Taranaki:

Southwest swell beating away at this part of our coastline all weekend. Southwest winds will predominate here as well tomorrow and the good news is a south to southeast wind is forecast for Sunday. The southwest swell will begin to ease tomorrow. It isn't that windy this afternoon in town and we have 3-4 feet of southwest swell. HT 1320.

Wellington:

West Coast; The further north you head, you start see more southwest swell wrapping on to the coast. Not big enough to worry about though. We have a light southwesterly of around 6 knots this afternoon. The forecast is for the wind to tend southwest and then southerly by Sunday. HT 1320. South Coast; Small south swell of about half a foot that will start to pick up tomorrow and we should see the bulk of the swell on Sunday. We have a couple of feet already this afternoon over the coast. Just the lightest of winds today with Lyall bay unbelievably glassy all day, so far. It looks like the southerly should start to fill in this evening. Southwest winds for the weekend unfortunately. HT 0820.

South Island

West Coast:

Masses of swell today with southwest winds. South to southwest winds all weekend and plenty of swell. The swell will start to ease tomorrow and slowly ease through the rest of the weekend. HT 0755.

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

A beautiful sunny day today with a light 6-knot northeasterly. The northeaster will be swept away tonight by a strong cold southwesterly and the swell will rise from the same angle. Pretty much flat today in Town and at Taylors. The other side of the Peninsular has a couple of feet of south swell that we are expecting pick up tomorrow afternoon. Kaikoura has 2 feet of south swell this afternoon and calm and glassy. Southwesterlies tomorrow with a rising south swell. HT 0820.

Dunedin; Southland:

Sunny here as well today, with a light onshore and a rising south swell of 2-4 feet. The northwester has gone and a southwesterly will fill in tonight. It is looking like southwest all weekend. The swell should peak on Sunday. LT 1155.

BIG UPS TO JESSICA!

Congrats to Jessica Welch from Gissy, who was a close second in the 14 and under Girls at Rusty Gromfest that was held at Lennox Head in NSW last weekend. Top effort from Jessica and all the other grommies that represented NZ!

The Rusty Gromfest is the largest youth surfing event in Australia. Around 400 12-16 year old surfers compete and showcase their talent in front of the national media, international surf industry scouts and a crowd of thousands.

Daisy Thomas Wins Rip Curl Grom Search

While visiting her Grandad in Wales, North Beach surfer, 14 year old Daisy took time to compete in the Rip Curl Grom Search at Porthcawl in South Wales in the UK. The contest was held on the12/13 July. Daisy is part of a very strong Canterbury Junior Development squad that have been training hard all year.

On a sweltering hot weekend with over 5000 spectators on the beach Daisy surfed through a single elimination system through 2 rounds to the final.

In the final she was up against 3 Swansea girls and won through to first place. It is the first in a series of contests travelling to Devon and Cornwall.

Meanwhile Daisy's older brother Llewellyn Thomas, who recently won the O'Neill Cold Water Classic in Kaikoura is training for an ASP World Junior Series event at Maresias Brazil 19-21 July and then returns to join former NZ team member Oli Adams and now English Junior Champion in the Cornish and Open event 8-10 August before returning to South Island circuit events in October.
