Book Design Award Winners
Craig Potton Publishing is the big winner in the 2003 Spectrum Print Book Design Awards.
Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith, edited by Maja Bloem and Martin Browne, was judged Best Book, and was also given the award for Best Typography.
Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith was jointly designed by Craig Potton Publishing’s Managing Director, Robbie Burton, and designer Jo Williams, of Nimbus Advertising. Both firms are based in Nelson.
The recipient of the award for Best Use of Illustration, Landforms: The shaping of New Zealand, by Les Molloy and Roger Smith, is also published by Craig Potton Publishing, and designed by Robbie Burton.
The award for Best Cover went to Wellington designer Sarah Maxey for Dog, by C.K. Stead, published by Auckland University Press.
Robbie Burton is currently attending a professional publishing course at Stanford University, and is unable to receive the awards in person.
The winners of the Spectrum Print Book Design Awards are announced in Christchurch on the evening of Sunday 21 July. Judged by bookselling and design professionals, the awards cover the categories of Typography, Cover Design and Illustration, culminating in Best Book. This year 188 entries were received from 25 publishers.
This annual competition is the only event where the publishing industry recognises the work of book designers. The judges, Hamish Meikle, Senior Lecturer in Design at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Art, and Kay Buisman, Whitcoulls Christchurch Regional Sales Manager, looked for books with design features appropriate to their audience, showing flair, imagination and innovation.
