"The New Zealand Music Industry Commission is proud to support the Urban Music Collective, a group of companies who represent some of the finest sounds coming out of Aotearoa (New Zealand). I believe that the Urban Music we have to offer is music that can translate into any language or situation, whilst still retaining the unique ingredient which means it could not have come from anywhere else except New Zealand. When you are looking out at the world from the South Pacific, you see things differently. Although we are connected by the commonalities of global culture, we are also detached by the ‘tyranny of distance’ – giving New Zealand musicians a unique perspective on the world. Urban Music New Zealand style. There is nothing like it". - Cath Andersen Executive Director New Zealand Music Industry Commission
TRINITYROOTS

With their roots running deep into soul, blues, reggae and jazz music, Wellington trio TrinityRoots has nurtured an indigenous organic roots music sound all of their own. Their gold selling debut album “True” won the Best Roots Album at the 2003 New Zealand Music Awards, and the contrast between their genre-busting recorded work and hypnotic live show is testament to their creative sensitivities & ability to entertain. Warryn Maxwell takes the helm with guitar & lead vocals, suitably backed-up by Rio Hemopo (baritone) laying down five strings of bass & Riki Gooch (falsetto) on drumkit. As live performers, TrinityRoots exceed all expectations, and through their presence and live energy, liberate what is the essence of integrity and heartfelt performance. Live credits include playing NZ shows alongside Ben Harper, Lee Scratch Perry, The Mad Professor, Rockers Hi-Fi, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Che Fu and Salmonella Dub.
RHIAN SHEEHAN

Welcome to the world of Rhian Sheehan, where acoustic melancholy meets synthesised soundscapes in an electronic mind meld, taking the listener on a rich and rewarding musical journey. Organic instruments are married to a computer-based bed of lush layered sounds. Intangible emotion is summoned from synthesised sounds. Sampled soundbites & snippets of dialogue are contextually redefined. No more than an assembly of simple sonic elements, no less than an ultimately unique & personal musical vision – this is “Paradigm Shift”.
Winner in the Best Electronica category of the 2002 New Zealand Music Awards, Rhian Sheehan's debut album “Paradigm Shift” released by LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa has been gaining increased interest from Europe and Rhian’s tracks are included on several renowned international compilations. He appears on the latest edition the internationally acclaimed Café del Mar. “Café del Mar Vol.10” includes the track “Garden Children”. Rhian also has two tracks on ‘NZ in Dub’, a forthcoming release from the German label – Select Cuts. On the live performance front Rhian & his 4-piece band are about to embark on an August tour of Europe including slots at Fabric in London & Café del Mar in Ibiza. Recently Rhian has supported many high profile acts such as Morcheeba & The Orb. Rhian is currently placing the finishing touches on his second album entitled “Tiny Blue Biosphere” which is due for release in Oct '03.

King Kapisi, the heavyweight of NZ Hip Hop, delivers his second album “2nd Round Testament” - the follow up to 2000's (nearing platinum sales) Savage Thoughts. 100% written and produced by King Kapisi - the man known as the Indiana Jones of all microphones - “2nd Round Testament” sees influences that include hip hop, jazz, ragga, reggae and soulful breakbeats. The first single to be lifted from the album was the NZ radio alt-chart topper Conversate accompanied by a super cool snowboarding video. The second single is the irresistible U Can't Resist Us featuring Che Fu on vocal duties. With this album, its strength is its diversity. "I sing, I rap, I ragga, I cut and I make beats, so I'm approaching it from a muso point of view. It's just music to me". "I hope that when people listen to my stuff they can go, 'I dig what he says, I dig what he plays and I feel it'. Because that's the whole thing in a nutshell." - King Kapisi Real Groove May 2003. His powerful presence at live shows have earned him a loyal fan base; He has performed alongside Janet Jackson, Moby, Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Red Hot Chili-Peppers and many more.
