UYM, Black Grave At The Edge

From the community that is UrbanYOUTHMovement, Black Grace and THE EDGE® Community Arts comes ESCAPE …Again

During the inaugural AK03, from Monday, 22 to Saturday, 27 September we are remounting the 2002 UYM production of Escape. The original production premiered to wild applause, standing ovations and sell out houses at the Concert Chamber, Auckland Town Hall, THE EDGE®.

Today we are a world living in escapism, a world of movies, yoga and getaway retreats. Everyone escapes everyday through games, music, sport and books; they escape in their heads, escaping rules and what is dictated to them.

ESCAPE is Superheroes, big and strong with the ability to get away. ESCAPE is learning to express your self. ESCAPE is the ultimate journey.

Created through a series of workshops, Artistic Director, Neil Ieremia has taken the energy, anger and honesty of a group of young performers and put it to some rocking tunes from Aotearoa/NZ and mixed by DJ Manuel Bundy. This year a new group of young performers have been put through their paces with some of last year’s UrbanYouthers to once again shake the Concert Chamber to its very foundations in true UYM style.

Design legend John Verryt provides a dirty great backdrop for Escape ...Again to explode onto the stage. While Jeremy Fern’s inspired lighting design funks up the atmosphere.

UrbanYOUTHMovement brings you live performance that captures the raw energy of New Zealand youth culture. Created by youth for youth. ESCAPE into Dance!
