Sydney Dance Company Masterclass in Auckland

News Release –1 September 2003

Sydney Dance Company Masterclass in Auckland

Thirty Auckland dancers have the opportunity to work with leading Australian dancer, Sydney Dance Company’s acting artistic director Brett Morgan.

A masterclass with Brett is offered as part of Sydney Dance Company’s season of Ellipse at The Civic, THE EDGE.

The class takes place at the UNITEC dance studios on Friday 26 September and is open to dance students of intermediate level and above.

Brett’s professional dance career spans almost 20 years. He joined The Australian Ballet in 1984 as a full time member while in his third year of study at The Australian Ballet School. Six years later he joined Sydney Dance Company and in 1995 was appointed dance master, then was promoted to rehearsal director.

Last year Brett toured the company around Australia and Europe and, during the Christmas break, he worked as creative consultant in Shanghai for the Wild Zebra project, which toured to Australia in early 2003.

Brett is currently acting in the position of Artistic Director while Graeme Murphy and associate director Janet Verdon are on sabbatical.

Sydney Dance Company’s production of Ellipse runs at The Civic from September 24 to 28 as part of AK03 – Auckland Festival.

Ellipse features collaboration with leading Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa, lighting designer Damien Cooper and set designer Gerard Manion as well as composer Matthew Hindson.

Inspired by Hindson’s wildly eclectic music, Ellipse takes audiences on a roller-coaster ride from full throttle hip hop, through the romance of a solo cello to the dreaminess of trance.

For more information or to register for the masterclass with Brett Morgan, contact Lauren Hughes on (09) 307-5367 or at laurenh@the-edge.co.nz. For tickets to Ellipse, book at Ticketek on (09) 307-5000.
