FRIEND
Korean director Kwak Kyung-Taek's 2001 movie Friend (Chin Goo), in Korean with English subtitles, has shown at film festivals in Pusan, Hawai'i, London and Vancouver. The highest grossing and most popular domestic film ever made in Korea, Friend is an elegiac gangster film that tests the bonds among four friends over the course of 20 years. in the vein of Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, the gang violence appears as a moving spectacle.
Screening: Sat 4 Oct, 7pm AND Sun 5 Oct, 4pm
IL MARE
Korean director Lee Hyun-Seung's 2000 feature film debut Il Mare - A Love Story (Siworae), in Korean with English subtitles, was the winner of the Audience Award at the 2001 Pusan International Film Festival. An exquisitely crafted romance set in an idyllic and secluded seaside town, the mood of the film is at once warm and melancholic, the performances of the leads natural and convincing. The film prompts its audience to ponder the question: does fate or choice bring people together?
