PlayStation2 Friday Arvo Surf Update

Here we go again. It is looking promising for waves at Raglan for the Oxbow. Finals are on this weekend. I'm nervous, well sort of about the rugby. I know we should beat the Aussies but will we? Don't get me wrong though, I'm a staunch AB supporter. Did anyone go and see Jack Johnson this week? Did you know the bass guitarist is one of the characters on the PlayStation2 game Kelly Slater Pro Surfer?

------------------ WEATHER SITUATION:

A beast of a low has just popped out from under the South Island and it is moving further to the east slowly. We have a big butty high in the Tasman Sea. A small low to the north another small low to the northeast with another big high sitting next to it.

---------------- REGIONAL REPORT:

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: Plenty of swell this afternoon and south to southwest winds. It's quite messy and lumpy. The swell is hanging in there and we have anything from 5 feet through 8 foot. The swell will be with us tomorrow and start to ease on Sunday. It is looking like a weekend of reforms if you hang around here. The wind will slowly go more westerly late Saturday and should be westerly on Sunday. Of course there are places to surf. HT 1430. East Coast: Pretty dam small this afternoon with fresh to strong southwest winds this afternoon continuing through the weekend tending a little more west by Sunday. Looking at the weather map we might just see a small lift in swell from the north late tomorrow arvo or sunday morning as a small low squeezes up against a high sitting next to it. Gisborne; Wairarapa:

Gisborne has a fresh southwest wind this afternoon and the little south swell has hung in there with 1-1.5 feet. We are going to have little swell lingering around all weekend of 1-2 feet. We could well get a short burst of northerly Saturday arvo and then it is back to the westerly quarter. The Wairarapa has an easing southerly wind and a small south swell of 1-3 feet. Taranaki:

Onshores this arvo and tomorrow finally swing southwest for Sunday. Rising swell from the southwest over the weekend that should peak by Sunday. Wellington:

West Coast: Pretty much flat now with a southerly offshore easing. Northwest tomorrow getting quite strong so we can expect to see a wind swell again. Northwest of 25-30 knots tending southwest Sunday morning and westerly in the arvo. HT 1335

South Coast: The southerly is slowly easing and we are expecting the wind to swing northeast late this arvo or this evening. We have 1-2 feet of combination groundswell and wind swell at Lyall Bay. Stronger Northwest winds tomorrow and then back to the southwest then south on Sunday. The swell will drop quickly but we should get a reboot Sunday arvo. LT 1450. South Island

West Coast:

No respite from the westerlies until Sunday when the wind will swing to the north. Plenty of swell from the southwest with 5-7 feet this arvo. Same tomorrow with the swell easing Sunday and rebooting on Monday. HT 1730.

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

Kaikoura: A light northerly this afternoon and a small south swell 1-2 feet. Rising swell from the south by Sunday at the latest. West to northwest winds most of the weekend with a brief burst of light northeast tomorrow. LT 1540.

Christchurch Beaches: The wind has swung northeast and we have 1-1.5 feet from the south up by the Pier and the wind is getting a bit stronger. Taylor's is looking clean but tiny and will be a better option tomorrow. We will see a little swell start to develop from the south on Sunday. Dunedin; Southland:

Light southwest tending northwest this afternoon then back to the west over the weekend. Not much swell tomorrow but we will see the swell lift from the south on Sunday.
