November News

The year is bolting toward a close at terrifying speed, but no one at IMNZ is contemplating holidays yet ‘cause there’s far too much going on...but bring on the Xmas drinks!

amplifier.co.nz is celebrating the addition of streaming video. Any act or band can contribute music to the site, which fans can download for a very small fee. The site’s collection of music includes Scribe, Nesian Mystik and Concord Dawn, who all regularly appear on their Top Ten, and Steriogram were signed to Capitol Records after being featured on amplifier.co.nz.

Baitercell & Timmy Schumacher's track 'Test Press' (with U.K DJ Mutiny) will be on Annie Nightingale’s Xmas special on BBC1. The pair are touring Australia late December for the Australian release of Return of the Booom Shwack (Kog). And in other overseas news, Mareko (Dawn Raid) is off to New York next week to release his debut 12" vinyl in the USA on December 1, it will be released locally December 12. 8 Foot Sativa’s Season For Assault album tour (Intergalactic Records) had sell out shows on their NZ tour, and their recent second Australian visit was a great success. A second world tour is planned for mid-2004.

New IMNZ member Legend Music’s debut release (via Jayrem) is Pounamu’s I Te Timitanga, brainchild of Drs Ngapo and Pimia Wehi, directors of the Pouanmu Maori Performing Arts Group. The track Timitanga was included on the official Rugby World Cup album, True Colours.

Urban Pacifika imprint Gifted & Maori have released the debut RnB album from Koha Kii, distributed by Maorimusic.com. New Ruia album Hawaiki will be released January 2004 on Tangata, and they’ll tour NZ in January and Australia in February.

Also on tour, to support their debut EP, are Odessa (MOKO), who are playing Wellington as well as Auckland, Helensville and Leigh in December. They are part of the Shunt party on December 6 at Galatos in Auckland, alongside One Million Dollars, Verse 2, the Artistry, the Hot Grits, Open Souls and HMX.

Soane has signed to In Music for his debut album, scheduled for release in February 2004. In Music now distributes Reliable Recordings, who released the Subware album, the Algorhythm and first Sun Valley Sounds compilations. Sun Valley Sounds 2 may see the light of day before Christmas. Debut releases from The Coolies on their label !!ssuxx!! Records (self-titled album) and Auckland hip-hop label 833 Records (West Steez compilation) are now out via In Music.

Katchafire’s album Revival has now sold well over platinum and a video for Colour Me Life will be on a TV near you soon.

From King Music, follow-up to Pacific Soul’s gold-selling, Tui-winning debut is The Collaboration. The album’s impressive guests include Max Stowers, Lole Usoalii, Lavina Williams (ex. Ma-v-elle), Jamoa Jam, and Brotha D (Dawn Raid). They will tour the USA (including Alaska and Hawaii), Tahiti, Australia, South America and Asia. King Music are also distributing the Grey Lynn Park Festival Compilation; featuring the likes of the Black Seeds, The Managers, Unity Pacific, Substax, DJ Logical, One Million Dollars, Stylus, and Baitercell & Timmy Schumacher. Also Lapi Mariner (Vodafone/Auckland Warriors commercial, Jamoa Jam), Marina (formerly Ma-V-Elle) and Jule Ta'ale and Sara-Jane Auva'a (ex Pacific Soul) join forces as The Allstars with Pele Ea, the first release by Le Fiafia Records. D'Licious (King Music/D1), produced and compiled by Avondale mix master D1, features a variety of all new talent from this emerging Auckland label.

In news from Global Routes, Emcee Lucia releases the first New Zealand rap record by a female artist on Aotearoa records, On The Cusp, featuring Finsta and Scribe. Dave McArtney has released solo album Hook on his own label, Robin Hood Records, and will be on the road in January. Flaming Pearl Records and Global Routes Music have signed Wellington rockers Autozamm. Kog Transmissions are building a live room for recording rock bands to be finished this month, and their first full project is Autozamm's debut album.

Capital Recordings have two 12" singles out via Rhythmethod. Audio Sauce’s Audio Sauce EP includes Bee Bo and Come and Get Me, both of which have videos on C4. Also Black Seeds’ frontman Barnaby Weir’s solo alias presents the Flash Harry vs. Video Kid EP from which Dawnskate-88 also has a video currently on C4.

Dusk have two new projects: Christchurch duo Artemesian, and Stars and the Underground, an electronic project from the vocalist of Winterland. Both albums will be released in the UK and Europe next year by Digital Darkcell Music.

Peachy Keen, the first band ever to receive Arts Alive funding, are currently recording their debut album at monkey records; who are also producing a
Monkey Magic compilation and tour. The tour will include Peachy Keen, Onelung, Shinya, Hummel, DJ Monkey and more.
