FRINGE '04: dGARE 360 degrees

At this year’s Wellington Fringe Festival, a dynamic act, thought-provoking to say the least, will rock Queen’s Wharf. Wellington-based singer-songwriter dGARE is to launch her debut album 360 degrees.

It’s a musical-visual experience altogether different. Song content, composition and delivery of a standard rarely seen in alternative pop albums. dGARE has worked with musicians from all over Australasia including NZSO string players to produce this album. 360 degrees is a concept album with an eclectic mix of songs that can stand solidly on their own or as a body of work. It’s honest, emotive and quirky in style.

dGARE’s vocals capture and enrapture. She has a voice to be reckoned with and a compelling stage presence. At the gig, a full band including pianist, cellist and a harpist will accompany her.

dGARE is performing three shows of 60 minutes each which include a potently visual multimedia screening. At this non seated event the audience is invited to bring a cushion to experience 360 degrees. It will be an intimate show that enforces the album’s theme of travelling through the shade and light of life’s experiences.

Like the arches splayed across the album cover, listeners enter a visual/aural journey of life experience as seen through the world of dGARE. This show will be unique in that it will also have a Sign Language Interpreter signing dGARE’s lyrics for Deaf, making the experience accessible to all.

The lyrics speak of life’s struggles and successes including themes that challenge social frameworks. They urge you out of a mindless comfort zone to truly examine issues. dGARE questions everything from the 60 minute sofa cure provided by therapists, to artistic criticism, technology and schizophrenia.

The performance will open with ‘Natalie’s Toaster’, a hip and unnerving take on the daily rat-race and finish with a fun retro-style version of it. With respect, some of the songs are truly haunting. Because the songs are so well orchestrated, powerful words speak volumes. They are raw, beautiful and exceptional. You may even get shivers down your spine. It’s not all intense however, ‘Shake ya Seuss’ is a rocking number that’s whacky and fun.

In a tribute to the French Impressionists, the track ‘Le Salon’ seems to self-reflect 360 degrees as a project daring to survive in the uninspirational climate of commercial music. Clearly dGARE’s 360 degrees has X-factor.

dGARE says, “360 degrees will deliver to those who appreciate artistic depths. It’s a project with guts and passion for what it wants to express”.

Heading to Shed 11, Queens Wharf either on; February 20 at 9pm, Saturday 21 at 3pm, or the final performance Saturday night 9pm will be worth your while. You will find your journey through 360 degrees risky, thought-provoking, and refreshingly outstanding.
