Artists Alliance
Artists Alliance is a membership based organisation established in 1991 to represent and advance the professional interests of visual artists in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Artists Alliance sees
itself as having a unique role, which is
- to be the
membership organisation of choice for visual artists
- to
be the advocate for the visual arts sector in the wider arts
community
- to have strategic partnerships with other key
organisations, both nationally and internationally, for the
benefit of members, constituents and the wider arts
community
- to provide a comprehensive set of services
which are specific to the visual arts sector.
In 2001 Artists Alliance joined the group of arts organisations receiving annual funding from Creative New Zealand. In advising of this funding Creative New Zealand said that the offer of funding reflected the Arts Board’s view “that Artists Alliance plays a nationally significant role in strengthening the voice and capabilities of the individual visual artist in New Zealand.”
Artists Alliance represents the visual arts sector
- as a member of the
Copyright Council of New Zealand;
- by having had a
presence on the steering committee for the establishment of
objectspace, a dedicated centre for contemporary craft and
design in Auckland;
- by representing visual artists on
the Auckland City Creative Communities Funding Scheme;
-
by being a member of a national Arts Advocacy Network;
-
as an Executive Member of the New Zealand Coalition for
Cultural Diversity;
- by being one of the founding
partners of The Arts Work Project.
Artists Alliance produces the following publications:
- A bi-monthly
magazine (usually 28 pages) that goes out free to members
and to subscribers.
- Appliance. This publication
lists shows at artist run spaces and covers editorial of
interest to younger, new graduates and emerging artists.
- The Guide for Visual Artists, that gives details of
competitions, awards and residencies available in the visual
arts in this country and some overseas opportunities. It
also carries information on Creative New Zealand and
Creative Communities funding, artist run initiatives and
tertiary art institutions. This is available for sale – at
a discounted prince for members.
- The artists’ workbook.
An inquiry tool: professional development for visual
artists. This resource is available free to members only
and has sections on the visual arts landscape; professional
strategy; business practice; relationships; communications
and resources.
Other services include advice on insurance, health and safety, finances (incl. GST), funding and sponsorship, CV preparation, contracts and other legal issues. If we don’t know the answer, we find someone who does.
In June 2003 Artists Alliance launched its website www.artistsalliance.org.nz
