‘Uncovered’ Bares Taranaki Music Roots And More
Exposed at Puke Ariki from February 29 is an exhibition revealing forty years of musical history in the region and complemented by a thought provoking international touring show that also features a New Zealand component.
‘Uncovered – 4 Decades of Taranaki Music & the international touring show Sound Design’, examines the personalities, players and events that have formed a part of the region’s popular music and dance scene since the 1960’s. Set in three main eras, 1960’s, 1970’s - 80’s, 1990’s to the present, each section presents some of the personalities that have contributed to the popular and less mainstream Taranaki music scene.
Sound Design looks at the relationship between graphic design and the music industry and is in two parts. The first is an international touring exhibition from the UK comprising 75 record and CD covers by renowned designers over the past 30 years. Accompanying this are posters, flyers, music videos and text from the designers represented in the show. The second part is Sound Design NZ style! Commissioned by the British Council in New Zealand with support from the Kiwi design and music industry, it explores how NZ music and design trends over a similar period were strongly influenced by the powerful UK model and yet maintained a definite NZ style and flavour. It consists of 40 framed covers with related text, memorabilia and ephemera.
Puke Ariki has been fortunate to have the unstinting and generous support of Energy FM, who themselves feature in the exhibition, Audio House, TSH Audio and Video, Dimocks Retravision and Macfarlanes. The exhibition opens on February 29 and closes on 12 April.
