Triangle Television's movie festival features the classic and the fantastic
Triangle Television's classic, horror and mystery movie series next month will feature Jane Eyre, several Dick Tracy films and a family favourite, Gulliver's Travels.
Triangle's movie festival screens three nights a week: " Every Saturday at 7.30pm entertainment personality David Hartnell introduces a family or timeless classic movie.
" At 10pm on Sundays Dr Uloff introduces The Fantastic Film Phenomenon featuring horror and B-movie classics.
" The Monday Mystery Movies series screens at 9.30pm.
Here is the schedule for May:- Saturday, May 1: The Last Time I Saw Paris (Richard Brooks, 1954) Charles returns to Paris where he once worked. He tries to write a novel but this causes difficulties between him and his family.
Sunday, May 2: Attack of the Giant Leeches (Bernard Kowalski, 1954) Soon after a trapper, Lem Sawyer (George Cisar), sees a large and unusual creature he is found dying of sucker wounds. When more people disappear the game warden (Ken Clark) heads a search for the leeches.
Monday, May 3: Dick Tracy, Detective (William Berke, 1945) Dick has to solve a series of brutal murders. He learns there will be 15 murders in all and has to find the common thread before more people are killed.
Saturday, May 8: Jane Eyre (Christy Cabanne, 1934) Jane Eyre, an orphan raised by an aunt, goes to Thornfield Hall as governess to Edward Rochester. Jane is attracted to him but, just when she senses the feeling is mutual, he invites the wealthy and glamorous Blanche Ingram to stay.
Sunday, May 9: The Screaming Skull (Alex Nicol, 1958) A husband's plan to drive his wife insane comes unstuck when a ghost interferes. Monday, May 10: Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (John Rawlins, 1947) Dick Tracy has to solve the case of a bank robber who uses nerve gas.
Saturday, May 15: A Star is Born (William Wellman, 1937) Esther Blodgett's dreams of becoming a film star seem to be answered when she is noticed by screen idol and alcoholic Norman Maine. They marry, but life takes a downward spiral when his career wanes.
Sunday, May 16: Beast of Yucca Flats (Coleman Francis, 1961) An atomic test turns a defecting Russian scientist into a monster.
Monday, May 17: Dick Tracy vs Cueball (Gordon Douglas, 1946) A diamond thief is strangled by Cueball who takes the gems and continues to murder people he thinks are swindling him. Dick Tracy attempts to set him up, but his plan goes awry when Cueball captures his girlfriend.
Saturday, May 22: The Racketeer (Howard Higgin, 1929) Mobster Mahlon Keane helps Rhoda Philbrooke cheat at poker so she can nurse alcoholic violinist Tony Vaughan, whom she loves. When Keane helps promote Vaughan's career she agrees to marry him but then Vaughan confesses his love. She now has to handle a mobster fiancé.
Sunday, May 23: The Terror (Roger Corman, 1963) An officer in Napoleon's army tracks a woman to the castle of a baron and learns she is being used by a witch who wants the baron to commit suicide.
Monday, May 24: The Shadow Strikes (Lynn Shores, 1937) A wealthy man is mysteriously murdered and his heirs fight over the inheritance. When underworld figures attempt to steal the prize the heir calls on the Shadow.
Saturday, May 29: Gulliver's Travels
(Willard Bowski, 1939) Animated version. Gulliver washes
ashore on Lilliput and tries to stop a war and encourage a
romance between the princess and prince of the opposing
kingdoms. He is helped and hindered by the Lilliputian town
crier and a dangerous situation ensues when a bumbling trio
of spies steals Gulliver's pistol.
Sunday, May 30: Revolt of the Zombies (Victor Halperin, 1936) During WWI the chaplain of a French regiment is imprisoned because he can turn men into zombies. He is killed in his cell by Colonel Mazovia (Roy D'Arcy) who steals information on the location of the secret formula. After the war there is a hunt to find and destroy the secret of the zombies.
Monday, May 31: The Shadow: International Crime (Charles Lamont, 1938) The Shadow is called on to solve the murder of a wealthy businessman. He faces challenges when foreign agents extort money from the man's brother.
Triangle Television is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station and has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1, 1998. The channel screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes. It is non-profit making and operates with no funding from NZ On Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
