Feel The Fear: JOURNEY At The Civic June 18

Feel The Fear: JOURNEY At The Civic June 18

Kevin Quinn features among 73 ski and snowboard athletes in Warren Miller’s latest snow action movie JOURNEY. We spend five minutes with him finding out what scares him …

Warren Miller’s JOURNEY screens at The Civic, Auckland from June 18-20. Book at Ticketek phone (09) 307-5000 or online at http://www.ticketek.com

QUESTION.Are you scared doing the steep runs in the film?

KEVIN. No. Steeps are all relative. The steeper it gets, the scarier I can get, but that’s what’s so special about Alaska.

QUESTION.What makes you nervous?

KEVIN. Anxiety. The fear of the unknown. The uncertainty. Once you’re in a chute you’re committed. That’s why it’s so imperative we mitigate all the hazards on the slope before the client drops in.

QUESTION.In JOURNEY, skier Kent Kreitler sets off a slide that nips his heels until he escapes to the side. Were you worried about him?

KEVIN. No. That’s not as dramatic as it looks. In the movie, Kent’s on a slope only 180cm high, tops. It’s not a huge avalanche, but the film makes it look like it is.

QUESTION.You heli-guide in Alaska – a pretty scary place for off-piste guiding we hear. After six years there, how do you feel about the place?

KEVIN. I was born and raised in Alaska

KEVIN. I’m 34 and it’s something I’ve always been part of – I love it. It’s my home. People will see this movie and that’s Alaska

KEVIN. There’s something for everyone there.

QUESTION.Where did you ski for Warren Miller’s next movie?

KEVIN. We skied Cordova (Alaska) two weeks ago. There’s going to be a lot more close-up terrain and there’s paragliding and skydiving.

QUESTION.You’ve been a big game hunting guide, a whitewater rafting guide, skydiver, pilot, rock climber and professional hockey player – what’s next?

KEVIN. I just want to keep moving – to keep on the track. We are starting another adventure operation that’s going to have surfing, sailing, scuba diving and skydiving. It’s going to be somewhere warm and there are three or four opportunities we’re looking at.
