Fifth Milestone Almost Reached! "Patience"
Fifth Milestone Almost Reached!
(Gilbert and Sullivan's "Patience" to be performed in Dunedin)
In its bid to stage all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas in Dunedin between 2002 and 2012, the Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust is in rehearsal with the fifth opera, Patience.
The Dunedin Trust's novel project is to present all the "Savoy" operas in historic sequence and in respectful but imaginative productions which reach the highest artistic level that can be managed. This is a unique undertaking and it has already drawn overseas interest.
Patience, a witty satire on artistic pretentiousness in late-nineteenth century England at the time of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, will be performed at the Mayfair Theatre, Dunedin, 4-11 September 2004, with the Southern Sinfonia.
The cast of love-sick maidens, self-indulgent poets and Dragoon Guards is led by the brilliant "one-woman" Wellington performer, Jane Keller, as Lady Jane and Dave Solomon as Reginald Bunthorne, Joel Allen as Archibald Grosvenor, Donald Evans as Colonel Calverly and Kerry Scurr as Patience. The Musical Director is Michael Andrewes and the Stage Director is Geoff Smith.
Patience follows on from Trial By Jury, The Sorcerer, H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance which were staged in Dunedin in 2002 and 2003. Next year's production will be Iolanthe.
