Sports Awards Honours Male Champions

2004 MAORI SPORTS AWARDS HONOURS MALE CHAMPIONS OF YESTERYEAR

Male champions of the past along with this year's Maori Olympians will be honoured at the 2004 Trillian Trust Maori Sports Awards.

Nominations have opened for 10 categories including administrator, coach, umpire/referee, disabled sportsperson, sports team, junior sportsman and sportswoman, senior sportsman and sportswoman, and the Maori world champion awards, as well as a Maori sports media award.

An annual Tamariki Sports and Cultural Day will again be hosted by Te Kura Kaupapa Maori a Rohe o Mangere at House Park Reserve in Mangere Central on Thursday, December 2, before the black-tie awards ceremony at the Auckland Showgrounds on Saturday, December 4.

Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa executive director Richard (Dick) Garratt says the theme of this year's event is ''Te Rongo-Tu-Taua a Maui' - honouring male Maori champions from the past.

Last year's ceremony paid tribute to Maori women sporting heroes. New Zealand netball's Temepara Clark winning Senior Maori Sportswoman before picking up the supreme award, the Albie Pryor Memorial Maori Sports Personality of the Year.
