New Zealands’ Top Baristas Go Head To Head For The Title Of ‘2004 Robert Harris National Barista Of The Year’

The steam is rising as the top six baristas in the country prepare to contend against each other at the finals of the 2004 Robert Harris National Barista Awards, being held next Tuesday 24th August, 10am at the Culinary Fare, Logan Campbell Centre, Greenlane. The first and second place winners at each of the regional heats make up the contestants, who will be competing to win the prestigious title of ‘2004 Robert Harris National Barista of the Year’. The winner of the Grand Final will go on to represent New Zealand at the World Barista Championships being held in 2005 in Seattle, USA – so there is more than just good coffee at stake here!

The six contenders are made up from the top two winners from each of the regional heats and are as follows:

Tyrone Kairuz – Columbus Coffee, Botany Downs, Auckland Paul Glover – Atomic Café, Kingsland, Auckland Claire Whitburn - Cafe DMP, Napier Amy Julian - Ozone Coffee, New Plymouth Luciano Marcolino - Vivace Espresso, Christchurch Carl Sara – Muffin Break, Christchurch - last years winner

The finals incorporate standards from the World Barista Championships as each contestant will be required to make four espressos, four cappuccinos and four identical signature beverages. Whilst competing they will also be required to give a verbal presentation.

As the most respected Barista Awards in the industry, the National Barista Awards are sponsored by a number of highly regarded companies and associations including; Robert Harris, Anchor, Faema, DaVinci, HSI and The Restaurant Association of New Zealand.

So, come along next Tuesday 24th August and find out who will be the next New Zealand champion Barista.
