Meatwaters04
September 9th to 11th Happy Underground Corner Tory and Vivian Streets Wellington
$10 per night, $20 for all three
The festival that just won’t shut up returns to Happy.
Meatwaters is a festival of music that seeks out the adventurous, the experimental, and the pure unabridged excessiveness that sends one into sensory overload.
Conceived as a festival of extreme music/ noise, it grew into much more. ‘Extreme’ became just one of the dynamics of the festival, solo singer/songwriters played with free noise, punk rock parlede with free jazz, bass drone met white noise. The festival expanded to include elements of visual performance, random acts of theatre, spontaneous painting to stimulus, the sonic assemblage of the chaotic and the conceived.
Following on from the massive success of last year’s festival, Meatwaters this year runs for three nights, starting on September 9 and runs to that date forever scarred onto our psyche, September 11.
Others amongst the line-up that prove, reinforce, and display the fantastic depth and breadth of the creative Aotearoa/NZ music scene are Golden Axe (AK), Armpit (Dn), GFrenzy (Onehunga), Ming (Lower Hutt), Cortina (WGTN) IF I had a gun…!?(WGTN) The Flower Orphans (WGTN) and Meatbix (AK).
Amongst the variety of line-ups are duos and solo acts, some of these are Kin Rahmane (AK), Kieran Monaghan & Jeff Henderson (WGTN), The Fingers (WGTN/ CHCH), and Disasteradio (WGTN).
Also performing is the duo Go Genre Everything, who brings to the festival their own brand of Aussie-surf-goth-rock.
Meatwaters will also include video installation by Mike Heynes.
Meatwaters is into its fourth year of presenting a selection of some of the most adventurous music makers from within this land and now abroad.
Kieran Monaghan, a persistant musician in the Wellington music arena, compiles the festival. He has been part of the active Wellington music community for a number of years playing drums for Sunship, Deconstruction Unit, Loosehead, the theatre group Roadworks/ Red Mole, and is the singer/ guitarist for the anarchic chamber-punk ensemble, the mr sterile Assembly.
