EXIT - EXPERIMENTAL EDIT INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL VIDEO FESTIVAL

Artists and video-makers are invited to submit work for exit, the inaugural Auckland International Experimental Video Festival, October 1st, 2004.

As a showcase of the most exciting anomalies currently on offer, exit provides a long anticipated forum for video explorations which seek to redefine cinematic experience.

EXIT aims to provide an audience for video considered to be on the periphery, video which are, for the most part, obscured from view. In this process of reconnection exit wishes to challenge the very nature of this conception.

4) VERSION FESTIVAL '04 CALL

The 2nd VERSION festival presents 7 days of electro-centric performance, presentation and discussion. The programme will span: CONCERT / CLUB / LOUNGE / INSTALLATION / SEMINAR / WORKSHOP

The Version Festival is seeking original and innovative compositions and/or re-contextualisation of media. Submissions can include one or a combination of the following: audio, video, interactive or process based performance / works. We encourage artists to extend their practice outside their bedrooms by collaborating with other performers or developing performance aspects. Collaborations may be within disciplines or inter-disciplinary. Technological assistance and limited funding provided to performers included in the festival programme.

5) MARCEL ODENBACH: INSTALLATIONS 2000-2003 > VIDEOS 1978-1995 at the Govett Brewster, New Plymouth

21 August - 5 December 2004

Marcel Odenbach is a pre-eminent video artist who has, since the 1970s, influenced the development of video as an art medium. His experiments in the areas of narrative and representation, production techniques (repetition, fade, dissolves, splicing from historical film footage), and technix (monitor, multiple channel projection) have established the ground for contemporary video practice. This exhibition focuses on the importance of 1960s political philosophy and activism within Odenbach's practice and the four recent video installations use classic 1960s European art films as their principal subject.

6) PHIL DADSON : POLAR PROJECTS at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Antarctica¹s wide white landscape is revealed as an extraordinary soundscape in this project by Phil Dadson. Winner of a recent New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate Award for his work as a sound artist, Dadson is presenting for the first time the results of his 2003 trip to Antarctica. In darkened galleries, he offers a winding journey through a field of ventifacts; watches (and listens) as high winds turn powerlines into an Aeolian harp; and generally finds in Antarctica a place that looks and sounds like no other on earth. 7) DIGI FEATURES PRODUCERS SOUGHT Producers needed to manage NZFC digi features scheme

ŒA list¹ film festivals such as Melbourne, Edinburgh, Berlin, Telluride, Venice and Hamburg, as well as established festivals such as Rotterdam and Sydney are all now accepting films shot and delivered on digital, either in official competition or as part of a digital sidebar programme.

The NZ Film Commission is calling for Expressions of Interest from producers interested in managing a new Digital Feature Film Scheme as Executive Producer(s)/Producer(s) of a slate of 2-3 Digital Feature Films per year over a 2 year period.

The upward trend in digital filmmaking and the advances in the quality of digital screening technology have been reflected and validated by the increasing number of established festivals which are now accepting films shot and delivered on a digital format.

Internationally the potential of this format is already being embraced by increasing numbers of established filmmakers who are now shooting digitally at all ends of the budget spectrum (from Spy Kids 2 to Lars Von Trier¹s Dancer in the Dark, to Michael Winterbottom¹s In This World, Dylan Kid¹s Roger Dodger and Hal Hartley¹s Book of Life).

This trend is also reflected in the rise in screening venues capable of projecting digital films. The UK Film Council has recently established a distribution and exhibition department with the aim of supporting the distribution and exhibition of specialised film in the UK.

A similar trend in New Zealand has been noted with a steady increase in the number of digital films being made each year. Digital films like Gregory King¹s debut feature Christmas, Florian Habicht¹s second feature Woodenhead, and Jason Stutter¹s Tongan Ninja have been picked up by the NZFC¹s Sales Agency and have found local distributors and international festival audiences.

The digital format is here to stay, and the audience for films produced and delivered digitally is only going to expand and grow as time goes by. The NZFC would like to assist New Zealand film-makers to make an international impact with films made in this highly accessible format.

HOW IS THE DIGITAL FEATURE FILM SCHEME DIFFERENT FROM A SHORT FILM TENDER GROUP? Many applicants will be familiar with the way the NZFC Short Film tender groups are run. The Digital Feature Film Scheme will be similar to the Short Film tender groups in that it is also a devolved funding arrangement. However it differs in a number of important ways. Firstly, potential Executive Producers of the Short Film tender groups are invited to tender for an established scheme, with established budgets and delivery requirements already defined. With the Digital Feature Film Scheme, we are calling for applicants to have input into the elements of the scheme ­ including what sort of digital features should be being made, how many should be being made, and at what budget level. Secondly, whilst the EP¹s for the Short Film tender groups provide assistance to the film makers they fund in terms of development and production expertise, they are nevertheless primarily commissioners, rather than developers of the short films they fund. With the Digital Feature Film Scheme we are looking for the EP¹s to play a much more active role in the films they fund.

We are particularly interested in hearing exactly how applicants plan to develop these films and how they will market them and deliver them to audiences. This more involved role may be reflected in a higher overhead for the management of the scheme than that which is on offer for the Short Film tender groups. Thirdly, the development of the films for the Digital Feature Film Scheme will involve a highly collaborative relationship with the NZFC and the NZFC will participate in production funding decisions. TIMEFRAME € Expression of Interest are invited for submission by end of business Friday 1 October 2004. € The NZFC will announce which applicant it will enter into discussions for the management of the contract after the November 1st Board meeting.

9) EXPANDING DOCUMENTARY - 2004 EXPLORING & CELEBRATING DOCUMENTARY IN AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND

23-25 October (Labour Day weekend) 2004 Massey University‹Wellington and The Film Archive

The fifth biannual documentary conference will be held this year in Wellington, a collaboration between the host Massey University and the University of Auckland, in association with the SDGNZ and The Film Archive. Following the structure of our highly successful 2002 event, there will be two days that interweave documentary presentations with academic papers. In addition, evening screenings will be held at The Film Archive. We are also inviting a number of Australian commissioning editors from SBS, the ABC and Screenwest who are interested in pursuing co-productions with New Zealand documentary makers.

DOCUMENTARY WORKS: Makers and artists are invited to show documentary works still in production (rough cuts, representative takes, or edited sequences, etc) or, if they are completed, have not yet shown widely. An open discussion session will follow each presentation. This year we are extending the form to include the documentary genre of still photography and related art-genres. The projects may come from every part of the documentary spectrum ­ community, political activist, avant-garde, mainstream, art-house, oral history, contemporary art ­ but each will be chosen for a particular and special quality. We are looking for exciting, innovative works. The final line-up of projects will be decided through a peer selection process.

DOCUMENTARY PAPERS: In addition to documentary works, selected written presentations will continue the debate and discussion around documentary film and photography. We are seeking papers for this forum from academics and others writing on documentary. Papers may focus on the subject of documentary within film studies, art history, cultural studies, media studies, fine arts studies, etc. Currently we are soliciting abstracts (250 words) for consideration. The final selection of papers will also be determined through a peer selection process.

EVENING SCREENINGS: In addition to the documentary work showcase and papers, we are also planning programmed screening events. These nightly events will showcase projects that have been completed, including a programme of works by South Island documentary makers. Practitioners who showed their in-progress work at the 2002 Documentary Matters Conference are also invited to submit their completed work for these screenings.

13) CALL FOR FESTIVAL DE CANNES RESIDENCE CANDIDATES

Every year, the Festival de Cannes Residence welcomes 12 young filmmakers from all over the world who are working on their first or second feature film. A jury presided by a renowned director selects 6 candidates for each of the two four-and-a-half-month sessions per year.

The candidates are selected on the strength of the short films, or the 1st feature, that they have already directed as well as on their planned feature and the reasons why they wish to participate in the Residence's programme.

14) PIKSEL04 - CALL

Piksel - www.piksel.no - is a yearly event for artists and developers working with Free Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) for realtime processing of video and sound. It will take place at BEK - the Bergen Centre for Electronic Art, in Bergen, Norway from october 29. to november 7. 2004.

The first Piksel event was arranged in november 2003, and gathered around 30 artists/developers from all parts of the world. It consisted of artistic/technical presentations, coding workshops and live performances. All activities were documented in a daily blog: http://www.piksel.nolog.html

One of the results from the event was the initiation of the Piksel Video Framework for 'interoperability between various free software applications dealing with video manipulation techniques' - http://www.piksel.org

An important part of piksel04 is a series of evening events of live art and audio-visual performance in cooperation with Landmark/Bergen Kunsthall (www.kunsthall.no/landmark). Performing artists using open source software in the creation and presentation of their work are invited to apply. This call goes out to VJ-crews, live coders, typing divas, virtual actors, noise combos and FLOSS performers of all kinds.
