New Zealand Monopoly Champion Set To Pass Go In Tokyo

New Zealand Monopoly Champion Andrew Dimock (26), sets off for Tokyo, this week to compete in the 2004 World Monopoly Championship.

At the two-day event held on October 8-9, Andrew will go head to head with Monopoly Champions from more than 40 countries. Competitors will play for a $US15,140 grand prize, which is equivalent to the money included in a standard Monopoly set.

Andrew Dimock won the New Zealand Monopoly Championship, hosted earlier this year by Hasbro New Zealand, the games distributor. North Island and South Island regional championships ware held with the winners and runners up competing in a 90 minute 'winner takes all' game, held at Auckland’s Britomart in July.

Andrew, an IT technician from Christchurch, is a keen gamesman. Not willing to give his tactical secrets away he says that he bases his strategy on negotiation and simply rolling the dice. “I’m pretty good at board games and after winning both the New Zealand Poker Champs and Monopoly Champs this year I am keen to take on the challenge of the World Monopoly Championship.”

Daniel McVeagh, Marketing Manager for Hasbro says Andrew Dimock was a top-class competitor in the national championship. “Andrew is an impressive Monopoly player. Hasbro is proud to send him to Tokyo to represent the country after his sterling efforts at the New Zealand Championship earlier this year.”

Held every four years, the World Monopoly Championships have been running since 1973.

Monopoly is one of the world’s most popular board games, it is currently sold in 80 countries, published in 26 languages with an estimated 750 million players from around the globe enjoying the game since its creation in 1936.
