Black Grace - Urban Youth Movement

BLACK GRACE & THE EDGE® Community Arts presents

UrbanYOUTHMovement

…they make dance disturbing, engaging and relevant. UYM Review, NBR, Sept 2003

THIS LIFE This life well it’s slipping right through my hands These days turned out nothing like I planned These Days, Powderfinger

The social order that is UrbanYOUTHMovement and BLACK GRACE asks you to question your reality. Try this on for size - what if the life you know has vanished; what if the revolution has come and gone and you are now left in total control of your destiny, ... do you make the world your oyster? …a better place? …or do you run for cover?

Bottom line… it’s your choice! It’s your journey!

UrbanYOUTHMovement’ THIS LIFE begins its journey in an empty clearing in the bush – you know the one - where the local kids would gather, that special place where life long friendships were formed and broken, the enemy was from the other side of the street and adult rules don’t exist.

As a starting point UrbanYOUTHMovement have considered the world of Orwell’s Animal Farm and Golding’s Lord of the Flies. The verses of renowned Niuean /New Zealand Poet and Artist John Pule’s The Bond of Time. An Epic Love Poem and song lyrics such as Paul Weller’s Wings of Speed…

Fly on wings of speed
That will bring you home to me
I'll never be free - from the darkness I see
As I wait for your smile.
For this process Artistic Director Neil Ieremia offers this year’s UYM members, an environment where they can dig deep, take risks - physically and mentally, creating movement that reinvents their perception of dance. Most make it through, some don’t but one thing is for sure their sense of self and physical boundaries are completely redefined.
