David Kilgour Tours With Yo La Tengo

Dawn Raid Launch New Label

Te Vaka On International Charts

Firstly, welcome to Border Music who are the latest additions to the IMNZ family; we now have nearly 40 member labels and distributors who are all putting in the hard yards for New Zealand music and releasing some exciting stuff.

US label Merge Records have released David Kilgour’s ‘Frozen Orange’ in the USA (it’s on Arch Hill in New Zealand) and David has just finished touring the Eastern sides of the US with the Yo La Tengo rotational travelling road-show extravaganza.

Te Vaka are impacting on world music charts overseas, with their album ‘Tutuki’ selling well internationally and hitting No. 3 on the Global Rhythm top 10 (this is the biggest USA World Music magazine) and No. 2 on Canada’s World Beat top 30.

Baitercell and Timmy Schumacher have just returned from an Australian tour and Pitch Black head across the ditch at the end of November to introduce our trans-Tasman cousins to their new album ‘From Ape To Angel’, which has just been released here on Kog.

Dawn Raid tell us that SRC Records in New York Has just released US hip hop artist Akon's Global Lockdown: The Locked Up Remixes 12 inch featuring our very own Savage, whose Locked Up Remix, which will appear on his debut solo album Moonshine, features on Side A.

Dawn Raid Entertainment has launched a new locally based artist label - Clientele records, focusing solely on fresh emerging New Zealand talent. Clientele’s first two albums are by Deceptikonz mainstay Alphrisk, and long-serving South Central Onehunga Hip Hop crew, R.E.S. Management duties for the Clientele label are being handled by Isaac Promotions head Mark Kneebone.

Dawn Raid have also been invited to attend the new generation designer category of Air NZ Fashion Week and will be showing their summer range – for boys AND girls - on the catwalk.

SJD's 'Southern Lights' has been getting international playlist props and broadcasting big-ups from Tim 'Love' Lee (on the BBC) and Kid Loco amongst many others. Phelps & Munro are being coaxed into further live activities as they join October's A Low Hum national tour alongside Phoenix Foundation and Cassette, a line-up not to be trifled with!

Lucid 3 are touring with Brooke Fraser, covering 15 cities in 17 days. The band are also playing at the Grey Lynn Park Festival in November, and are currently preparing an enhanced CD for US-only release.

‘Bondi Calling Volume 2’ has just been released through Australian label Vitamin Records and it includes tracks from kiwi artists Twinset feat. Barnaby Weir and one million dollars.

Whirimako Black has 2 out of 3 of the songs that are finalists in the APRA
Silver Scroll Maioha Award for te reo songwriting, the first time this has happened. Mai Music’s newest signing Bennett is just finishing his new single Baby Gone Bye Bye. He recently landed a lead role in a TV ad for the LTSA, so you may have already seen him on your screens.

Pine have finished tussling with the home studio in downtown Christchurch making album number two, ‘Akira Sunrise’, which is out now. Look out for NZ tour dates shortly. The album was mixed and mastered by studio whizz Dale Cotton (HDU, Conray, Sleepers Union, Mestar and others), and the cover artwork was a collaborative Pine project as all three members are also visual artists.

Also in from Arch Hill, Fang have just finished making a sleep-walking doughnut-eating video for the track Something Good, directed by Richard Bell.

The originators of the ‘Poly-Fonk’ sound, Ardijah, are releasing their new album ‘Journey’ via King Music this month, complete with ukeleles, pate, tribal chants plus scratching from DJ CXL. This album is looking set to go down a treat all around the Pacific.

Marking a change from Rattle’s previous successful Mäori instruments releases, ‘Tühonohono’ (‘Weave Together’) marries European form with Pacific texture. The artists – Richard Nunns, Judy Bailey (no, not the newsreader) and Steve Garden - became enthusiastic about the prospect of a musical dialogue between piano and taonga püoro (traditional Mäori instruments), after meeting on a previous Rattle project.

Kahu Records are a hive of activity, with singles coming out from Mo’Reece, Salisha and Brazilian-born guitarist Maximiliano. Max’s first single, ‘Summer Lounge’, includes remixes by UK producer Jason Eli. Maximiliano and Mo’Reece both kick off tours at the Auckland George Benson concert on Friday October 22nd. Mo’Reece’s single No Reason Why features on the current NZ On Air Kiwi hit disk and his national tour has been sponsored by Creative NZ. Salisha’s debut single ‘I Saw an Angel’ was recorded and written by US producer Tony Battle.

Congratulations to the IMNZ artists who have just been selected for NZ On Air video assistance: JCK (Antenna), Pine (Arch Hill), The Fanatics (Capitalrecordings), Alphrisk (Clientele Records), Salisha Taylor (Kahu), Katchafire and Bennett (Mai Music), SJD (Round Trip Mars), Minuit (Tardus), Bryan Bell (Wildside) and to Adeaze feat. Aradhna who received a radio hits rebate.

And if you’re looking for some live action, The Managers have lined up a night of it on Guy Fawkes' (5th November), teaming up with Cornerstone Roots and dDub.
