The Magnificent Flying Picture Show
Director: Veialu Aila-Unsworth Musical Director: Blair Latham
Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!
Toi Whakaari hosts a unique cabaret screening of some of the oldest and most lascivious silent films this side of Europe. Get transported to 1940s New Zealand for A Day at the Beach with the Airey family; follow the trail of a French Peeping Tom; find out what’s so gay indeed about The Gay Shoe Clerk and join in – yes, that’s right, join in - the adventures of Rover, as he rescues the nuclear family from the perils of society.
Accompanied by a live orchestra led by Blair Latham on sax and clarinet, featuring local musician Rosie Lanjabar on piano, and vocal artist Bert van Dijk, plus Tim Beals, Tom Pierard and Nicki Lillicrapp on cello, guitar, vibraphones, percussion and more! Each film features a live soundtrack and commentary by our randy Master of Ceremonies, Bradley James Schmidt. The MC and his bawdy-licious cabaret girls Ewa Zielinska, Brooke Dobson and Penni Bousfield invite you to watch the song and dance - and play along.
Also starring Shannon Small, Claire van Beek, Vaughan Slinn, and Brendan Withy, come along for New Zealand’s First Naughty Cabaret and Silent Film Screening.
Bring your umbrellas!
Show commences 8pm – 3rd, 4th, 5th November, $5 waged/$3 unwaged

Director Veialu Aila-Unsworth is a student in the Master of Theatre Arts in Directing, taught jointly between Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School and the Theatre Programme of Victoria University of Wellington. Though a combination of practical and theoretical studies during this two-year postgraduate programme, MTA students develop the necessary skills to direct and initiate projects in the professional theatre and related areas.
This project is one of a series of practical directing assignments that constitute a substantial component of the second year of study. The director is responsible for all elements of the production, and has an opportunity to explore a particular style of theatre. THE MAGNIFICENT FLYING PICTURE SHOW is therefore a showcase for the kind of creative contribution the director will in the future offer the New Zealand professional theatre.
