Day one: camera and digitising Day two: editing and output

Digital Video - its accessible, inexpensive and you can do it all yourself. Learn some basic theory, then shoot your footage and finally create your video. Taught by filmmakers Darcy Gladwin and Ben Murtagh, the two day Introduction to DV workshop is a practical guide to the process of shooting, digitising, editing and outputting Digital Video. Using MiniDV cameras (the most popular format amongst short filmmakers) and editing on Apple Macs running Final Cut Pro, the student gets to grips with the camera and edit-suite and takes home a final VHS edit. Basic theory of Digital Video is covered; this includes format comparison, an equipment overview, compression and decompression, avenues of screening, film-festivals, and web video. Lighting up Skycity Theatre from 22-31 of October, the festival aims right for the jugular by latching on to the current hotbed of Eastern filmmaking, Korea. The George Fraser Gallery presents LITTLE THINGS TAKE TIME, curated by Eu Jin Chua, which opens on Wednesday, 27th October, and runs until 12th November

Eu Jin Chua¹s interdisciplinary background is in architecture, literary studies, film and media studies. He teaches history and theory at the School of Design, Unitec, Auckland. The exhibition is partly an offshoot of his current research on cinematic wonder and presents miniature moments found, captured, and created by Elam Intermedia students, graduates and invited artists, including: Fuyuko Akiyoshi, Prue Cunningham, Catherine Garrett and special guest artist from America, Shirin Neshat.

The bigger and more Kong-like movies get in New Zealand, the more inclined I am to seek out the small, trivial, the intentionally inconsequential. So here is an exhibition about time and scale, consisting of little worlds where time is a leisurely eternity, things are permanently scaled to tiny, and settings are invariably set at Œloop¹. The works in this show are spectacular because deliberately unspectacular, important because deliberately unimportant. Or vice versa. The small, are boring, and the everyday embraced. Fragmentariness, contingency and unpredictability are the primary strategies. Lyricism, nostalgia, and kookiness are the dominant modes. This, I¹m happy to say, is a majorly minor show at the George Fraser. Eu Jin Chua

4. CALL FOR PAPERS REFRESH! FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE HISTORIES OF MEDIA ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Banff New Media Institute, Canada, September 28 - October 3, 2005 http://www.mediaarthistory.org Deadline: Dec. 1st 2004

"The technology of the modern media has produced new possibilities of interaction... What is needed is a wider view encompassing the coming rewards in the context of the treasures left us by the past experiences, possessions, and insights." (Rudolf Arnheim, Summer 2000)

Recognizing the increasing significance of media art for our culture, this Conference (Evening of Sept. 28th, Sept. 29th, 30th, October 1st) on the Histories of Media Art will discuss for the first time the history of media art within the interdisciplinary and intercultural contexts of the histories of art. Leonardo/ISAST, Banff New Media Institute the Database for Virtual Art and UNESCO DigiArts are collaborating to produce the first international art history conference covering art and new media, art and technology, art-science interaction, and the history of media as pertinent to contemporary art.

Held at The Banff Centre, featuring lectures by invited and selected speakers, the latter being chosen by an international jury from a call for papers, the main event will be followed by a two-day summit meeting (October 2-3, 2005) for in-depth dialogues and international project initiation (proposals welcome).

5. CRITICISM AND CREATIVITY IN 21ST CENTURY MEDIA

We are seeking an innovative teacher-researcher to join a dynamic and growing department, recently named top media and communications research department in New Zealand. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute significantly to the department's research profile and to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Existing specialisms include digital media (including games and mobile telecoms), indigenous media, political economy, creative industries, globalisation, audience and reception studies, media history and theory, media literacy, e-democracy. Applicants with significant research outputs in creative media are also welcome. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the post by June 30th 2005.

A PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent accreditation and professional standing will be required as will an international research reputation. Success in attracting external research funding and grants would be an asset.

6. CALL FOR ENTRIES : LA CENTER FOR DIGITAL ART JURIED SHOW

LACDA announces an open call for our juried competion for digital art. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of 2D (flat) artwork and photography created or transformed digitally are accepted.

Show is international, open to artists of all geographical locations.

Prize: The selected winner recieves 10 archival prints of their work up to 44x60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $1500-$2000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our gallery. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Five second place winners will win one print up to 24"x36" to be included in upcoming group shows.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have already been included in our exhibits.

Show Dates for winner: December 10-31, 2004.

Deadline for entries: November 21, 2004. Winners will be announced November 28, 2004.

Entry Fee: Registration fee is $30.
