Record 'Australasian Invasion' Predicted In 2005

For South By Southwest In Austin 200 Australian & New Zealand Artists Applied for Showcases; Attendance Quadrupled in 2003; More to Come!

It's only four months to go before the world's largest and most prestigious music event series kicks off in Austin, in its 19th year--having started in 1987. Of more than 6500 artists from around the world who have submitted their material for a showcase slot in the 1100 night shows to take place at South by Southwest Music & Media Festival and Conferences in Austin Texas March 16-20, nearly 200 Australian and New Zealand artists listed below (with more to be confirmed in the next week) got their submissions in by the October 29 cutoff for international artists.

It's a tremendous mix of established and up and coming homegrown bands or solo artists who see SxSW as a crucial opportunity to play before the assembled 10,000 attendees-including a vast array of record label & publishing A&R managers, over 700 print and electronic media representatives, managers, agents, promoters, venue owners and other music professionals. It's estimated another 50 artists will be added to this submission list as their late entries are accepted and logged, but time has run out for any further showcase applications for 2005.

While 20 Australian and six New Zealand artists fronted the SxSW stages last year (of which ten major deals eventuated), this year it's likely that 30 Australian and 10 New Zealand artists will be invited to play with acceptances to be confirmed in early December.

SxSW band showcases and professional delegate attendance have quadrupled since 2002 and this year, over 150 Australian music business attendees and close to 50 from New Zealand are expected to register as participants with a healthy media contingent to cover the event. Both countries' attendees are being supported by their respected Federal Government's and some state government entities.

Once again, AUSTRADE and the New Zealand Music Industry Commission have invested in major stand presences to support the bands and businesspeople who will be representing Australia at South by Southwest in a second 'AustralAsian Invasion' to help crack overseas markets for a broad range of musical genres and entrepreneurs. There will also be a 36 page 'Australian Music Guide' street-press style, free, 15,000 copy newsprint magazine inserted in all 10,000 attendees' showbags, distributed at key CD stores or venues as well as on the Australian stand.

This advertising supported industry initiative was introduced last year and was the most successful marketing strategy of the entire event-establishing an unbeatable street presence for our artists and attendees, which wowed competing countries' contingents.
