Cheeky Twins Hit The Coromandel Ultimate Wave
Cheeky Twins Hit The Coromandel For The Ultimate
Wave
We’re seeing double on Maori Television as the Wano twins from Taranaki take to the road in pursuit of the ultimate goal of any self-respecting surfer – the perfect wave!
TE HIKOI MAHANGA is a Toa TV production screening on Maori Television on Sundays at 9.00 PM. Te Kauhoe and Wharehoka Wano are touring around the coastlines of Aotearoa as they test the theory that they have been known to spend unprecedented amounts of time and money seeking out the ultimate ride.
Self-confessed waxheads, the twins match their love of Tangaroa with their love of te reo and tikanga Maori as they travel the width and breadth of New Zealand to talk to relations and friends at local coastal marae.
This week, the twins are heading to the lush Whangamata to test out the theory that the beach is known as the Coromandel’s surfing centre. The 4km long coast line provides some spectacular surfing breaks yet safest swimming in the area.
Some of the best surfboard manufacturers and designers are also locally-based and the surfing culture of the small town has been known to go wild at the local surf club and over the odd New Years Eve!
However, the twins are due to discover that the waves at the Coromandel don’t always live up to their reputation, yet all is not lost. They will learn an invaluable lesson about ESP and discover some intriguing local art along the way.
Te Kauhoe Wano is a freelance broadcaster with experience in both Maori and mainstream media and fluency in te reo Maori. Among his credits include a role as presenter / reporter / director with the documentary series Waka Huia and freelance work for TV3 News, Mana magazine, Radio Waatea and AKA Productions.
Meanwhile, Wharekoha Wano comes from a teaching background, having taught at Whakatane High, Taranaki Polytech and Massey University. He currently runs his own company, Tihi Ltd, which is primarily an education service running professional development programs for teachers
The series premiered on Sunday October 3 at 9.00 PM with the twins starting off in their home town in Taranaki. Since then, they have called into Piha, Gisborne, Raglan, Ahipara, Port Waikato, Maunganui and Whangarei in their pursuit of New Zealand’s ultimate wave and the verdict is yet to be decided.
Find out if they strike gold in Whangamata on TE HIKOI MAHANGA, this Sunday November 28 at 9.00 PM.
