News Release
17 January 2005

They’re Back!!
Waatea 603am Evening Talkback Starts up for 2005

Night time talkback on Radio Waatea 603am returns to the airwaves again with a fresh burst of energy for the New Year.

First up this week is the very popular revolutionist show “Liberation Talkback” with Syd Jackson on Monday. Tino rangatiratanga and independence for te iwi Maori are the focus of these 3 hours. Maoridoms’ first Female Broadcaster, Vapi Kupenga fills in for Mr. Jackson this evening.

As always on Tuesdays, we have “Te Puutatara” hosted by Jim Perry. Te Puutatara brings the ever important issues of health, education, welfare, justice, politics and business to the forefront. Mr. Perry’s vision involves educating listeners so Maori will have an informed opinion on the hot topics of today.

“Nga Putake Wahine” with Titewhai Harawira has long been the one of the most listened to current affairs/talkback shows on the Maori airwaves. 2004 was a big year for Mrs. Harawira’s show which gained notable interest from national and international organizations and personalities. BBC sat in with Mrs. Harawira last year to gain an honest perspective of Maori feelings towards the foreshore and seabed debate. The 3 major Auckland Mayoral candidates also appeared on her show acknowledging her listener ship and involvedment in all things to do with the community.

Thursdays brings us the varied, interesting and entertaining “Korero Atu, Korero Mai” with Kingi Ihaka. Every week Mr. Ihaka has an in studio guest who answers questions directly from the listeners. Past guests have included John Tamihere and Rodney Hide. This week the new CEO of Maori Television, Jim Mather, sits in on the show to talk about his goals and plans for MTS.
