Cycle Route Network Needed Urgently
The Wellington region urgently needs a comprehensive, safe cycle route network if high injury rates are to be brought down, says lobby group Cycle Aware Wellington (CAW).
Welcoming today's Government announcement of a funding package for Wellington transport, CAW spokesperson Jane Dawson said cyclists want to see a sizeable chunk of the new Traffic Demand Management money being spent on cycling improvements.
"Councils in the region know that cyclists have a higher risk of injury on our roads than almost all other road users, but they have done very little to bring that risk down." said Ms Dawson. "Making it easier and safer for people to cycle in the region needs to be a much higher priority."
CAW wants work to begin soon on constructing a network of cycle facilities in the regon. "Cycling must be built in to all the other transport projects being undertaken in the region too." said Ms Dawson.
