Calling All Antarctic Artists And Writers

Applications for the Artists to Antarctica programme are now being sought by Antarctica New Zealand. Begun in 1996, the Artists to Antarctica Programme is a joint initiative between Antarctica New Zealand and Creative New Zealand. The programme is open to prominent New Zealand artists and writers, from all disciplines, who are at the forefront of their career. CEO Lou Sanson said that the Artists to Antarctica programme added a unique dimension to the NZ Antarctic programme and offered the public another window on the world of Antarctica.

"Innovation and creativity thrive in Antarctica. Taking artists down to the Ice stretches the imagination and allows them to respond directly to this rich and rewarding environment. Art is also a great way to share impressions and experiences with people who will never get the chance to go themselves."

"One of the strengths of our artist's programme lies in its diversity. Previous Antarctic Arts Fellows have produced a wide-ranging body of work inspired by Antarctica's people, places and history. The programme also fosters collaboration between artists and science which has increased public understanding of the science that we support through Scott Base each season."

Selected artists visit Antarctica to explore the physical, environmental and creative challenges of this unique environment. The artists will join a distinguished group of Antarctic Arts Fellows which includes poet Bernadette Hall, painter Nigel Brown, children’s author Margaret Mahy, sculptor Virginia King, ceramicist Raewyn Atkinson, dance choreographer Bronwyn Judge, print maker Denise Copland, composer Chris Cree Brown, photographer Anne Noble, fashion designer Fieke Neuman, intermedia artist Phil Dadson, jeweller Kirsten Haydon and furniture maker/sculptor David Trubridge.
