The Mongrel In Me At The Festival Of Colour
It’s a night of award-winning singer-songwriters when Shona Laing joins Mahinarangi Tocker and five more of New Zealand’s finest musicians for the ‘Mongrel in Me’ concert at the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour in Lake Wanaka.
Tocker herself is renowned for her memorable songs of love and survival reflecting her Maori, Celtic and Hebrew ancestry that she delivers with extraordinary power and depth of emotion. Her 1996 album was named by the New Zealand Listener as one of New Zealand’s ten best CDs of the century.
For ‘Mongrel in Me’ Tocker is joined by Shona Laing, David Downes, Anahera Higgins, James Wilkinson, Denny Stanway and Jimmy Young. Festival director, Philip Tremewan, said he was delighted with this line up of great Kiwi musicians.
“Shona Laing has built a formidable body of songs over the years and, like many of us, spans the decades right back to her initial burst of stardom in the 1970s,” he said. “Denny Stanway, Jimmy Young and James Wilkinson are very popular Christchurch musicians with their fine, engaging style. David Downes has written outstanding music for such shows as Michael Parmenter's "Jerusalem" and continues to be one of our great composers and keyboard players. Anahera Higgins has another life as a member of that naughty group of female singers - Manic Opera."
Mongrel in Me is sponsored by Christchurch International Airport and takes place in the Infinity Pacific Crystal Palace on 29 April at 8.30pm. Tickets are $28 available through the festival web site at www.festivalofcolour.co.nz or by calling TicketDirect on 0800 4 TICKET.
