Kicking off proceedings is the glamour comedy event of the year. The ODDFELLOWS Comedy Gala will roll out the red carpet on Friday 29 April for a sneak preview of all of the must-sees over the 3 weeks of festivities. Filmed live for television this high profile glitzy event will deliver an impressive line-up of big international comedy stars including Stewart Lee (Eng), Jeff Green (Eng), Gamarjobat (Jap), Kitty Flanagan (Aus/Eng), The Umbilical Brothers (Aus) and Danny Bhoy (Scot). Accompanied by the crème of local kiwi talent, including Te Radar and Michele A’Court, this event marks the beginning of the funniest party of the year.
Comedy is busting out all over the city. This year two new venues have been specifically created to house the ever-growing audience of comedy goers. The first of these new hangouts is THE PLAYHOUSE COMEDY UNDERGROUND - located at The Wallace Trust Gallery at 305 Queen Street, this venue is Auckland’s newest comedy boutique – an “underground” space to showcase the talents of the most bohemian local and international performers. THE CLASSIC STUDIO will also open its doors on the 1st floor of 321 Queen Street – a truly intimate comedy experience – the talented little brother of the mother-ship that is The Classic Comedy and Bar.
This year sees the welcome addition of a new naming rights sponsor for the 12th Annual NZ International Comedy Festival. ODDFELLOWS has long been a brand that has been synonymous with humour and they are delighted to be associated with such a high calibre event.
Another exciting development in 2005 is the start of the inaugural People’s Choice Award. This award is designed to reward performers and audiences – a big THANK YOU to the people who actually bring this festival to life.
