Radio One: 21 years with STRAITJACKET FITS
Sammy's, Saturday 7th May
It's
one of Dunedin's dirty little secrets that for years the
locals have been furtively
engaging in superstition:
making wishes on the first star in the evening sky, finding
four-leaf clovers, and holding our breath till we
collectively turned blue, fell over and spilt our beers.
STRAITJACKET FITS
But it was all worth it, because Dunedin's wishes have been answered with the return of our favourite musical progeny – Straitjacket Fits! Oh yes. Shayne Carter has temporarily removed his Dimmer hat, and he's joined by fellow Fits David Wood, John Collie, and Mark Petersen to reform the band who were New Zealand’s premier rock purveyors in the late 80s and early 90s. We never forgot them, and now they're back just in time to see Radio One – the best radio station in the Southern Hemisphere (damn you, Radio Free Portugal! We could've been #1 worldwide!) – come of age.
Carter says "considering we started out in Dunedin so many yonks ago we are extremely happy to be turning the normal order of things around and finishing our tour, hopefully triumphantly, in our old home town. We'll enjoy the odd deja vu of being back at Sammy’s and - don't tell anyone north of the border - we really hope to save the best show for last!"
People who saw the Fits the first time round will be lining up already, but for those not lucky enough to have witnessed the live phenomenon, Radio One's 21st is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the shivers-up-your-spine intensity, the near-perfect songwriting, the magic that is a Straitjacket Fits show. Joining them on the night are Die! Die! Die!, fresh from their US tour and boasting a multiple-selling new EP, and local “sub-ironic shoegaze quartet” Gestalt Switch.
Bloody hell. What a way to celebrate 21 years of Radio One. Cheers Red Bull.
