The hard yakka of competition fencing just got easier with the introduction of a consolation round in the Fieldays® Waikato Draught Wiremark Fencing Championships.

For the past 36 years, New Zealand’s top fencers have competed in the hope of taking home the prestigious Golden Pliers title.

Competition coordinator Elysia Shirtliff said she hopes having the consolation round as part of the Golden Pliers singles competition will encourage more fencers to enter.

“Some of the beginner entrants in the past have been put off entering because of the level of skill that the other finalists have,” Miss Shirtliff said.

“For some it is a bit daunting when you are competing with the likes of legendary fencer and nine times Golden Pliers title holder Paul Van Beers,” she said.

“The consolation round offers those who are starting out in competition fencing the chance to gain experience at national level and win great prizes.”

Miss Shirtliff said this doesn’t mean that the competition has lost any of its prestige. “Like any endurance sport, the competitors must train to ensure not only that their skills and theory is up to scratch, but also their fitness level in order to take out the competition.”

Fieldays® welcomes Pacific Wire (in association with the Wiremark brand) on board as a major sponsor of the competition, along with established major sponsor Waikato Draught and supporting sponsors Matamata Post and Rails, Tru-test and Stihl.

Pacific Wire will have a strong presence in the ‘Training and Education’ area down in the fencing compound. As in previous years, this area will be used to promote fencing as a career opportunity as well as showing new developments and techniques to Fieldays visitors.

Entries are now open for the singles and doubles Fieldays® Waikato Draught Wiremark Fencing Championships.

Entry forms are available from www.fieldays.co.nz or by calling (07) 843 4499.
