BOX OFFICE OPEN

The “Applaud” Christchurch Arts Festival 2005 box office opens to the public on Thursday, May 12.

Preferential bookings for the festival which opened to the ‘friends of the festival’ and corporate sponsors following the festival’s launch on April 24, have been well subscribed.

Reviewing ticket sales for the first two weeks festival director Guy Boyce described the early signs as “encouraging.”

“Nomade, Micheline van Hautem and Lauchie, Liza and Rory are all selling well as we predicted,” he said.

Eddi Reader’s show as part of the “Celtic Connections” series in the Isaac Theatre Royal has been a surprise early seller.

Scottish singer Eddie Reader is a unique figure in contemporary British music. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism have seen her effortlessly develop into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers.

Advance books are also positive for Brenda Earle’s shows in the TV One Pavilion. Likened to Diana Kral, Canadian singer/songwriter Brenda Earle and her band run through tight originals and supped up standards drawing from such jazz greats as Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Elvis Costello

Cantabrians have a reputation for booking for events at the last minute which often meant people missed out seeing shows they wanted to attend.

“I encourage everyone to book early for the festival,” said Boyce “we have such a fantastic programme of events that leaving it too the last minute will be risky. There mightn’t be tickets left.”
