Taupatupatu : A Matariki Special On Maori TV

PUBLICITY RELEASE

Taupatupatu : A Matariki Special On Maori Television

Maori Television’s riveting debate series Taupatupatu is planning an explosive one-off special in celebration of Matariki 2005, screening on Sunday June 12 at 8.00 PM.

The one-hour TAUPATUPATU MATARIKI SPECIAL is broadcast entirely in the Maori language and will feature Maori debaters of the highest echelon. Breaking from the traditional format of iwi vs iwi, the one-off debate pits men against women, with host Julian Wilcox holding court above what promises to be an electrifying exchange of words.

Dignified contestants the calibre of sisters Tihi Puanaki and Moe Milne (Ngati Hine / Ngapuhi) joined by Tini Molyneux (Tuhoe / Ngati Kahungunu) go head-to-head with the esteemed males’ team, represented by Dr Patu Hohepa (Ngapuhi), Ching Te Hau Tutua (Ngati Awa) and Ruakere Hond (Taranaki).

But – this one-off special contains a juicy twist. Not only will the members of each team debate the moot “Is Matariki relevant to us”, each debater will be judged on a musical performance from each side. With a chance to strut their stuff, the debaters will perform a waiata, haka, patere (ancient song) or other traditional Maori performing arts item that will, in a perfect world, relate to the topic!

This special also brings back the reo expertise of judges Te Kepa Stirling (Te Whanau A Apanui / Ngati Porou) and Quinton Hita (Ngapuhi) to reward or deduct points for the use of the reo, content, humour and originality.

The live studio audience will also contribute to what is promising to be a dynamic combination of light-hearted and controversial debate. Designed to entertain and test the ability of its participants, the TAUPATUPATU MATARIKI SPECIAL promises a robust evening of entertainment for the thinking generation.

The TAUPATUPATU MATARIKI SPECIAL broadcasts this Sunday June 12 at 8.00 PM.
